  1. As I age I tend toward the conservative.
  2. We don't have a lot of money going to the winner so it is fun to almost always go for it. I like the challenge. And it is good practice for when the stakes are high.

Working with Trackman and dialing in distances about 2 years ago my whole approached changed. I know, with out fail, that my 3/4 sand wedge choked down 1-1/2” will fly 72-75 yards and stop. Since that kind of dialing in, I started laying up to that yardage. My new Vokey SM really helped to control the distance.
With that said, if I need eagle....grip it and rip it.

As a representative of the older set - 68 years old and the rotator cuffs to prove it, these days, mostly I'll be laying up and planning a confidence shot to achieve the best score. When younger, I would go for it 80% of the time (at least). It is a very individual process depending on experience and ability. Whichever you choose, have fun.

We've all found ourselves facing this very question on the course... Lay up or Go for it? Are you someone's who's always going for it, never laying up, no matter the situation? Do you tend to take a more conservative approach and play to a number, setting up your next shot? Or does it always depend on the situation? Cast your vote in the quick poll below and add a comment to share your approach or the story behind your strategy.

If there's no hazard, I'm going for it. If there's a "safe" miss, I'm going for it. If there's OB or water and it's anything more than a comfortable distance, I'm laying up to a number.

Once I decided to start laying up if my second shot was over 240 yards. I started noticing the big numbers were staying off my card.
  7. At a 15 hcp, I will lay up most of the time. However, alot of it depends how I'm playing that day. If I'm hotting it well and have a chance to break 80........go for it.

I don’t play for a lot of money, and I’m now 70 years of age. So, what the hell, go for it. You just might hit a really good shot.
My index is about 11, and it may not be going down in the future. I play AP1 IRONS, and the NXT TOUR ball now. I played the Pro V1x for many years and just recently switched to the NXT. How is that new ball compared to the NXT?
    Love your products. Thanks, Don

Always go for it. You can make a bad swing laying up as easy as you can going for it.
    Good fdor the bigger reward

I'm playing for fun, not a living. 250 or less and I'm going for it.

This Season I played a more of a going for it approach. By doing that it exposed the weakness's in my game but also taught me my limitations. Which made me work on those weakness's more, and a better golfer in the end. In the end 2017 was a good year of golf for me. I lowered my average by almost 4 strokes and feel that Im close to having a real break through in my golf.

This is pulling one out of the archives. Back in late winter of 1995 I was on a group trip to northern Florida with 24 guys. Mid-trip we are teeing it up at Cimmaron in Jacksonville, FL. First hole was/is a par 5, dogleg right. A nice drive leaves me about 220 from the green, pretty much all carry. One of my playing partner uses the, 'You didn't come all this way to lay up' line. I put back the 8 iron and hit a hit a nice three wood to the fringe, leaving the eagle putt on the lip. A nice start to the front nine. The front nine ended even better as I used that same 8-iron to knock it in the hole from 135 for my second lifetime ace.
The woman who lived behind the tee came out with a beer and said she'd been living there for five years and that was the first hole in one she had seen.
Two eagles in one nine would have been something. It was a great trip.

If there are no hazards to carry, I am going for it or trying to get as close as I can. If the hazard carry is 220 or less it is a green light, anything over and I layup. I play smart, but lean to the aggressive side.

I believe no matter the conditions it comes down to staying in your game. Having played long enough to be titled a 'senior player' I had to re-learn my game to stay competitive. I play tee and fairway shots to get to my next shot and I stay aggressive inside 100 yards with my scoring clubs where I am on a more equal plane with the course and playing partners. I love being aggressive always have, only now I'm aggressive with my short clubs and play the odds. Laying up? Just another term for course management for me. Seems to be working too!

I'm getting old...still love to play. Don't have as many opportunities to "Go for it" but when I do have the chance, you can bet I'm all in!
  16. I would usually always go for it but now a days I play a little smarter and lay up! It shows on my handicap and tournament play.

I'm usually a "hike-up-your-pants-and-go-for-it"/Arnie-type" guy, but I do take the elements, lie, and all other circumstances in consideration. I can tell you one thing though, I wouldn't have done what JB Holmes did last week - if I was truly trying to win the tournament.

It depends on the situation, but I will usually lay-up so as not to lose strokes to my stupidity.

Because of my stellar chipping game...not, I usually play to a number. But if the wind, green and water is inviting, I'll go for it and take my chances with the Texas wedge.
  20. If it's over 255 carry I'll lay up.
