I am totally with CoolBreeze. NO! Play golf. If you guys want to do this to speed up play then do it but DO NOT post you scores to a USGA handicapping system.

In football there are different rules. High School. College, Pro and Canadian to name a few. In Golf you have the USGA, PGA, LPGA and the R&A, not to mention local club rules. What I am saying is that the vast number of recreational golfers do not play in sanctioned USGA events, yet they still play by their rules, but only to a certain extent and they still post their scores for handicap. They do this because when you are in Rome you do as the Romans. An example is like the group I play with. Four man teams are made by a random throwing up of balls and all players play by their handicap, best two balls on a hole determine the team score. Local rules are made for the conditions, but mulligans are played on the first hole every time. Putts inside the leather are given. "The Leaf Rule" is usually invoked during the fall and winter. If you strictly play by USGA rules you are playing on an unlevelled playing field against the opposition. Our large group of players range from a plus 1 to a minus 21 handicap. What I like about our game is that you never know who is going to be on your team and who is going to have a hot game and we play for a small sum of money. Are the players handicaps accurate by USGA standards? The answer is no but they are accurate for the way we play our weekly games. The truth is that other groups in our club also play in a similar way and I am talking about 600 golfers. I guess another title for this subject could be, Should You Post A Handicap Score When Playing By Local Rules ?

In reality, how many are giving all sorts of putts "within the leather", and rolling the ball in the fairways. There's lots of folks who do things differently in different groups. MOST of my Club plays by the rules even on a $2 nassau. Like everyone else said, if you're posting for a handicap then do it right. If you end up out of bounds and don't want to go back, especially if you're not playing for anything really, then drop where you want, and take your double or max your handicap allows. I suppose in reality, if someone is posting scores taking drops at the point of out of bounds, then I'll play you, because your handicap is lower than it should be, advantage me. But with me, you're going back or you just lost the hole.

I have to echo previous comments that only one set of rules is necessary, but whether you choose to follow the strict rules of golf is up to you and your foursome. When in league play, there is no option, I must follow the book. But if I'm out with three of my buddies who aren't golf fanatics like everyone here is, I'm not going to hold them to the letter of the law. While I'll follow the book, I have no issue if they take liberal drops, or even pick up if they're blowing up on a hole. The idea is to have fun.

As long as you put the right score down that's all think that matters

When you're playing competitive golf the rules apply by the book. If theres no trophy or prize at the end of the day, and you're not entering the score for handicap, play under whatever everyone agrees to.

However, if you do play in a competitive event or you're playing for handicap. Know the rules.
