This Youtube video changed me as a putter forever. "You will never putt the same, Mike Malaska"

    Malaska has three key points.
1.) In practice he uses a ball that has a line completely around it. You have to be able to putt the ball so the line rolls true.
2.) You have to be aiming where you think you are aiming
3.) And, you can not have an outcome based putting philosophy.

After reading all the advice and thinking about your situation, which in golf is not a good think I might suggest one more thing. Putting is all about letting the putter do the work. Let the putter follow the ball to the target. Keep the ball on line. I do not use any markings on the ball. I use the line on my putter and do my best the let my putter do all the work. Putting all about feel and taking any and all thoughts out of your head. One other thing; practice, practice, practice......with respect.....what can you loose, give it a try.........
  6. I have a six-foot puttout putting mat and pressure putt trainer ... I bang out 30-40 putts in a row in the morning and before I go to bed ... if anything gets/feels funky, I throw down a mirror and some gates to find out what's going on and focus on the fix. Now when I'm standing over any putt inside 6 feet I feel confident because I have practiced them so much. May just be a mental thing for me, but it seems to be paying off...

Here is what helped me. A friend gave me a putting drill - three balls/three putt attempts from 2'. Must make 2 or more to move to 3'. If you continue to make at least 2 of 3, keep adding another foot to the distance. I stop at about 7 or 8' as percentages start to get against you. If an any distance, you fail to make at least two putts out of three, go back to the 2' putt and start over.

I modified this by working at two sides of the hole, using 8 or more balls (four on each side, three 'in play' and one marking the next length - or use tees, ball markers, etc. for the distances) and alternating my set of attempts from one side of the hole to the other. You will also learn whether slight right-to-left is easier or harder for you than the opposite break.

Try to maintain a pre-stroke routine if possible, but the main point is to see/hear the ball go in the hole from short distances up to 7' or so. Not only will your short putting improve, but your lag putting will get better because you won't feel the pressure of needing to have your first putt very close to the hole. Try using a line if you aren't improving with time. You'll know you are successful when your buddies start calling you 'automatic'!

If you still struggle, it might be worth visiting a facility with a SAM Putt Lab to see exactly what is happening during your stroke. I learned some valuable information from an hour's time
  8. For me on this length putt unless it is a very fast slick green I hit them hard enough to hit the centre of the hole ... in otherwards take the break out of the putt
I see so many guys try to putt to die it dead speed at the hole and the majority of them break and miss

Am taking a seven week course with a group of fellow veterans under the PGAHope program. This is a refresher course from me since I have not played since December 14th. In our first lesson by the head pro, who is a PGA Master Teaching Professional (A USGTF Master Golf Teaching Professional certification is the highest level of attainment in the golf teaching industry. Master Golf Teaching Professionals have demonstrated a teaching acumen and ability of the highest order.), this was part of our first lesson. He used a yardstick as an alignment tool to show us the importance of takeaway and follow thru. He teaches not to take the putter (the back of the putter) back more than six inches, which keeps it on line and follow thru with your stroke ensuring the ball gets down the intended line to the hole. He broke us up in groups of two and there were yardsticks all over the putting greens. Kinda funny, but it does work. Not something I had worked on in the past but really made since, because it did work. He has been in the golf business over 35 years. We appreciate him volunteering, as well as the other four PGA professionals working with us at the Muni. As I have always said on here, when you need help, go see a teaching pro.
