Getting new wedges soon. I think I’ve decided on SM7s but I’m not 100% which 3 to get or which grinds to go with. PW is 46 and I felt good with my SM5 60. Not sure if I should do 52/56/60, 50/54/60 or 50/56/60. I’m leaning towards 50/54/60.

As far as grinds go, I’m sold on the F for the 50/52, but not sure on the 54/56 or the 60. My previous 56 was an S grind and I wasn’t very confident with it, but I used it mostly for full shots and out of the bunker, so I was leaning towards the S again. With my 60, I also had an S but I like to open the face sometimes so I am leaning towards the M. I’m afraid I would chunk to many with the L grind. Also, I don’t want to lose the ability to feel confident on full shots with any of the three. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have played the 50.08F, 54.10S, and 60.08M for several years now. I'm in Florida, so having a variety of sole designs give me options around the greens. I think the gapping is ideal for me, as my PW is also 46 degrees. For full shots, my PW is 130, 50 degree is 115, 54 degree is 100 and 60 degree is 82 yards. The 60 degree is my go-to bunker club, unless I really need the extra run-out for longer shots, in which case I use the 54. The sole of the 54S is just versatile enough to open it up a little for longer pitch shots to flight it low and to get a couple bounces and check up. The 60M is just a great all-around tool with either a square or wide open face. My only addition will probably be a higher bounce 54 to use during the wet summer months, but the rest work great for me.
  3. My PW is 46* as well. I carry a 50, 54, 58. I carried a 60* for years but, honestly, after putting the 58* in the bag, I can hit all the same shots and the gapping for me is a little tighter. I always thought I would miss my 60*, but I do not.

I played the SM7s last season and switched to the SM8s recently and would say that the feel and response off the face have felt better for me in the SM8. The ability to flight my wedges and control spin have improved as well.

May be worth a wedge fitting, if you are able.
  4. I have also dropped the 58 for a 60. Can still lay it open and flop but it is much better on a fuller swing. It is after my putter the most used club in the bag.
  5. I just switched to 50/54/58 Vokey SM8s. The hype is real with these.

my PW now is 46 and I have the 52/56/60 SM7. I purchased this before getting my new irons where my old PW 48.

PW goes 140, 52 goes 120, 56 goes 110 and 60 about 90 (hardly use it for full shots).

Thinking of getting SM8 in 50-56-60 and bend the 56 to 55. I have a gap in my PW and 52 so I try and avoid 130ish shots or play the green

Thanks for the replies. Brock, it sounds like you have the same setup I’m interested in.

I’d really like to get SM8s but I don’t think I’ll be able to drop the extra $120. I guess the SM7s have most of the same grind options so I could get a fitting and still go with SM7s

Thanks for the replies. I’d like some SM8s, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to drop the extra $120. I guess I can still get some SM7s with a fitting since most of the grind options are the same.
  9. I think bounce is more important than grind, but there are several people on here who swear they can tell the difference between the different grinds. I just put an SM8 60.4 under the tree. I don't have it in front of me, and I don't even know what the grind is. However, around the green, with low bounce I know I am going to be able to chip off tight lies and get lots of spin on the ProV1x or the AVX. Hoping to play on Friday if the snow melts.
The key with any full shot wedge is distance control. Whatever grind you choose, you need to know if the ball is going to stop or release. Really a personal choice in my opinion.

New wedges is a great purchase. They feel so good in your hand. For me I, i have trouble with too much spin and getting new wedges usually makes that problem worse. I have thought about getting some new ones though

yeah bounce is more important. F grind S grind and M grind are the most common. it all depends on what shots and how you are going to use the club

Regarding grind and bounce, one thing you may want to think about before you decide, is how steeply or shallow your downswing is, along with the conditions you normally play in. If you play in firm conditions, less bounce, soft conditions, more bounce. Shallow, less bounce; steep more bounce.

To me those factors are just as important as wedge gapping (degrees separating each wedge).

Hope this helps. Best of luck.
