Veterans who are not retirees can now get on bases to play golf...

    Veterans helping veterans: They may be veterans like myself who may have served one or two tours and were discharged because of a disability or were a POW or were given a Purple Heart and are receiving care a VA hospital or not. If you have a rating 0-90 and do not have a VA health card you can get that ID by following the instructions. Some of the bases in your area have golf courses, like mine, and we cannot get on the base to play the course or use the commissary or PX. Well that all changes the first of January. I am posting this link if you are interested in seeing if you qualify and how to sign up. Be nice to go on vacation and be able to play a course in the area where you are relaxing at a reasonable price. Here is the fact sheet with all the requirements and FAQs....

    We can take our spouse on the bases, but am trying to see if we can take a guest or guests to the golf courses. If any of you find out please post it. Told one of my buddies in Colorado and his first response was I can now use the Class VI. Next time in San Diego, would love to play Sea n Air......when I travel will see if there is a base nearby.....think this will work and it is long overdue...... cheers

    Yes, you should be able to take guest and play. They will pay a higher rate of course, as it is prioritized for playing by (rank, active, retired, DoD Civs, Guest, etc). They are usually limits as to how many guest you may bring.

    Problem will be getting on base, (visitors pass available at the gate, carpool is best option). Also tee times are hard sometimes because of many active duty players are "unwinding" from deployments or just plain stress downtime.

    Best way is to research course via website or contacting Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) office/website for the course. Sometimes you can call the course directly and inquire. Some bases have par 3 courses that are lighted too.

    So enjoy my brothers and sisters.......well deserved benefit after all these years..... Don't forget your DD214/VA ID card/Discharge orders, or some kind of proof of service.

    As explained in the reference site all you need to get on base is your VA VHIC card. The VHIC must display the veteran’s eligibility status (i.e., PURPLE HEART, FORMER POW or SERVICE CONNECTED. That is all you need to get on base. This is all explained on the site and that is your proof of service and eligibility. If you do not have a VHIC card it explains how to get. A regular VA ID card will not work. Checking out the site should answer all you questions....as to getting on the course, locally, I just call the course direct and get a tee time. They are very cooperative and glad to assist. I play in the local courses invitational tournaments and have since the early 90s as a civilian. Main reason this is being opened up is because commissary/exchange is losing money. They opened up exchange system to all veterans a couple of years ago on line. I made a few purchases there. In today's economy the competition is stiff for everyone......

    In the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, the Sewell's Point golf course is now open to the public. Great old Donald Ross course opened in 1926!

    There is an update for getting spouses and others to use your benefits.

    You might have to join to have access the site, but it is no problem if your a vet, and its free.

    I went into the site today and it did not ask me if I was vet or not.....basically it is the same info as is posted on the above site....I checked with the base here and the information is slow getting to them......If you are a disabled/purple heart/pow, veteran, just make sure you have the VHIC card. Go by your local VA hospital to get yours as explained on the VA site above. Everyone is required to have a background check to get on military installations. I hope you take advantage of this and enjoy whatever of these benefits you choose to use. I have been using the Exchange system online for about two years and now I am excited about using the courses. Will check out the prices at the commissary and let my wife make that call. Notice they do have a 5% up charge, plus a small charge for using credit cards.

    Just announced that disabled veterans with proof of disability can get into national parks for free. Went by Ft Moultrie today to pick up an ID and they said they were out but that my VHIC from the VA would get me in but to apply at any National Park and I could get the pass. This is us guys out who are not retired from the military. Will go back later and the ID. I worked with Veterans for over twenty years before retiring from the State of SC and assisting veterans with information continues.
