Suggestions for courses around St Andrews April 2012

    Hi we are planning to play the Old and New Courses at St Andrews and would like other suggestions within the area to Play . Also any recommendations on Housing, the group I’m with has varying income so not too extreme / Any suggestions welcome … thanks PS: a Black Team Titleist hat would be a nice to show off!! 

    Hi Lefty, nice choice of courses. All of the St.Andrews courses are great but some can be expensive. Played the Dukes course last month which was tough but got a twilight tee-time so only £30. My friend is a member round the coast at Crail Golfing Society which is about a 20 minute drive. It has two courses Balcomie Links and the Craighead. Balcomie is steeped in histoty and the modern Craighead is stunning. Great views from the clubhouse as well. Enjoy your trip

    Carnoustie is about an 1.5 hour drive and another place near St. Andrew's is Kingsbarns. Completely agree about Crail. We are planning a second trip for July 2012.

    I always try to play the Eden course when at St. Andrews. I think it is the best value of all of the St. Andrews Links courses ..... middle of the price range (~30 pounds I think) and runs along side the old course on a few holes. Also it has a great club house with an excellent restaurant. As with most of the St. Andrews courses it can play relatively easy when the weather is mild, and extremely tough in strong winds.

    If yoou haven't been to Scotland yet, you're going to love it.  As for a place to stay, there's the Dunvegan Hotel that is sand wedge away from the Old Course.  You can't miss it.  And the food and ales are great.  EVERYBODY goes there after golf.  And as for courses, they are many, but the Dukes course is an American looking course.  Links golf is a once in a lifetime adventure.  And if you're looking for a caddy, ask for Keith Halfpenny.  "Yes."  That's his name.  Have a great trip.
