This was my first ever ace, and it happened at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky, my hometown. One of the best parts about this was that it was during the second round of the Girls Junior PGA Championship, where there were 40 other girls in my age division (16-18).
I had played 4 holes so far, and then we arrived at the 5th tee box. I did my normal thing; put my glove back on, shot the yardage with my range finder - the yardage was 147 yards uphill, so roughly 152 - and grabbed my 6-iron out of my bag. I was slightly nervous to hit that shot because not only was it a difficult par three - as there is a fence and road behind the green and the green itself is fast and undulating - but there was also the head coach from the D1 college Eastern Kentucky University out at the course watching players (at that moment, she was watching me). So, naturally, I kinda had to take a deep breath before hitting and just trust my swing. I was hitting a Titleist Pro-V1 with my school name inscribed on it, "Madison Central Girls Golf," and that shot was straight as a board and came in just left of the flag. I didn't think much of it, really, just watched it bounce gently on the front of the green, and then I stepped off the tee box. But at that moment, right when I was stepping off the tee box, the parent spectators all started shouting, "Hole-in-one!" I was sort of confused as first because I didn't see it go in the hole (which was a real bummer) and I briefly thought that they were joking. But then it finally sunk in and I was so elated at what I had just done. It was such a special moment because not only did I make it in the hole from 147 yards uphill with a fast, undulating green, but I also pushed past any sort of doubt I had in my mind and simply trusted my swing. All of the best rounds I've ever shot in my time of playing golf (nearly a decade) have been where I trusted my swing, no matter what kind of emotions I'm experiencing. After that hole, I received so many congratulations from people all over the golf course, which was so special. It was like the golf version of the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." Being 16 and 8 months (a soon-to-be senior in high school), this was such a memorable accomplishment because many golfers go an entire lifetime without a hole-in-one, or just experience one over the course of their career! But, needless to say, I'll always remember that day, the 1st of June in 2022, when I made my first ace, and ended the round with a 6-over-par 78 (40-38). This is why the game of golf is so special to me.
