In celebration of my buddy getting married, we started the day (Saturday, July 18, 2020) off at the links. With 12 guys playing golf, it was a fun way to have a little betting, a little laughter and a lot of competition!
As we approached the #9 Tee, the dead heat of the day was upon us and there was no wind to account for. The course had the pin near the front of the green. One of the guys in my foursome shot the pin to be 155 yards but the hole is above the tee so it seems like a nice and smooth 8-iron for me.
As I swung through the ball the arc of the shot seemed favorable as it was headed just left of the pin. The ball landed about 3 yards short and bounced once then the slow roll took place. As we all watched, you could hear the others in my foursome saying, "Oh that looks good", "no way", "oh, that's in!" and then pure, genuine eruption as the ball disappeared. I couldn't believe it! Everyone around was cheering!
Fortunately, I had a cart but unfortunately, instead of using the cart i sprinted all the way up to the pin to confirm what we had all thought. I jumped and threw my hands in the air in jubilee and proceed to throw my hat up in the air like I just won a Championship! In doing so, golfers on all of the surrounding holes, on the practice green, and at the clubhouse were cheering and clapping in celebration. In this one moment, the course had stopped to observe one of the game's rare occasions. It was the best moment in my golfing career!
I have never seen a hole in one in person and most people I talk to say that for their hole-in-ones just kind of happened and they never saw it go in. I, fortunately, got to see the entire shot from tee to green to hole.
