For over 10 years we've been playing evening golf on Wednesdays. Our "go to" was a goat ranch called Bluebonnet Hill in Manor, TX. A dump of a course with a hard working GM and a superintendent that kept the greens SWEET despite his horribly scarce budget. It closed on 1/1/20, so where we play now and the pandemic has us playing different spots. Today we played a sweet course called Golf Club Star Ranch in Hutto, TX. With the concerns surrounding the pandemic our attendance has dropped off and on this day it was JD and I. Playing a $5,$5 and $5 and ironically me giving him 5 shots a side!
I shot one over on the front, but was being whooped and down 3 holes entering the back. Halved 10, 11 and 12. Had to eagle the par 5 13th to win a hole, and made a silly bogey on the short par 4 14th, and came to the short but treacherous par 3 #15.
Pretty stiff breeze into us and we lasered the pin at 113 yards. But it placed in a HUGE "sucker pin" location in the front left of the green. You can see in the picture, front left is a little slither of the green, brings the water into play and makes a chip from left of the green really tough.
I was so in between clubs! JD hit a peach choked down wedge over the pin, and it sucked back off the slope almost into the water. The wind, the pin position, the contour of the green, the spin off the wedge all working against us. So, I chose the wedge too, but choked down significantly.
I have been so blessed to have made 6 hole in ones prior to this one. ALL of them were struck as pure as I can hit it! This one was no different. Struck right in the center! Little left of the pin and deep of it. When it landed I knew it would slide back towards the pin too! That's where the trash talking begins... "here it comes JD, here it comes!!!" the marshal who was there sanding divots says... "Ohhhh this might go in..." the POOF!!!! Gone! That's when I went nuts!! That part is such a blur and its been less than 24 hours.
I'm just so glad one of my closest friends was there to see it! I can't leave out the worst part, I finished bogey, bogey, double!!!! Lost the front, won the back, but lost the overall! Made a H.I.O. and lost $5!!! This game giveith and takeith, all in a 40 minute span! Thanks golf Gods!
