  1. My friend, Francine Hammer, and I were playing a two person scramble against Jennifer Dunaway and her sister, Cheryl Doyle. We do this often and Jennifer and Cheryl always beat us. On December 18, 2020 we started the day at Timber Creek Golf Course in Friendswood, Texas. The day promised to be cool (at 50 degrees) with wind picking up to 15 – 20 mph later in the morning and we were lucky the course was not cart path only but we still had pretty wet and muddy conditions. The day was proving to be unusual as Francine and I somehow were 3 strokes ahead of our competitors by the 6th hole. There was plenty of ribbing going on and Francine told me repeatedly we better get as many strokes ahead as we could before Jennifer and Cheryl started pouring on the gas. By the 7th hole of the nine hole Creekside, the wind was blowing hard out of the south. At the tee box the short par three was measuring 95 yards. The green on this particular hole had been in trouble for a while and was completely sanded over with very little grass in sight. I had played this hole the day before and had told Francine there was so much sand on the green, when I put my putter to the ball, I thought “oh wait, I can’t ground my club in the sand”… then remembered I wasn’t in the sand trap, I was on the green! Francine had been listening to me for the last hour and a half discuss the difficulties I was having deciding what iron to use with the wet conditions and wind. She had been decisive about telling me what I should do and it seemed to be working pretty well – as we were ahead! Francine hit her shot and then I took out my 6 iron and said to her “I am going to hit a bigger club because of the wind, the sand and the elevated green.” She said (like all good caddies) “go for it.” The hole was in the far back right corner of the green. The front of the elevated green is protected by a large bunker on the right front. I hit the ball cleanly but it stayed a little lower than I would have liked. It hit the front of the green and was rolling hard toward the back of the green. Because of the sand, we all had a hard time knowing where the ball was and then we all heard the ball hit the flag stick HARD. We all know what happens when the ball hits the stick hard… the ball caroms off in all directions, usually far away from the flag stick. Francine and Jennifer both used their range finders to see if they could see the ball but had no luck. Cheryl and Jennifer both hit their balls onto the green and we drove up. I got out and looked all around for the ball assuming it was in the rough in back of the green. I gingerly tip-toed to the hole and there was my Titleist ProV1 sitting in the cup! I turned around to the group with a big grin and they knew I had just accomplished what I had never before done in 34 years of golfing. I made a hole in one! I was stunned. In the picture, I have on my one black shoe and one white shoe – in support of PGA player Cameron Champ and his grandfather. What a special day and special picture! At the turn, we told our friend Glen (one of the marshals at Timber Creek) that I had made a hole in one. As the round went on, we realized that everyone on the course was hearing about my feat because all the marshals were acting like Paul Revere – going up to every group and announcing my accomplishment. It was great to have my 15 minutes of fame.
