Well, I had my first hole in one a couple of weeks ago. On Wednesday, December 23rd, my buddy David and I drove down to the Richmond, VA, area to play Royal New Kent, a phenomenal Mike Stranz design. We got paired with Darryl from Cincinnati, who was in town visiting his daughter. It was pretty cold and I was really just playing ok but hey, it’s December and I’m playing golf, how bad could it be. We get to the par 3 number 12. The yardage was 146 yards a little down hill. I swung a 9 iron and I’m going to tell you right now, it was one of the smoothest swings I’ve ever made. The ball was flying directly at the flag and While it was coming down Darryl yelled, “you’re buying today!” The ball (Pro V1X) landed about a yard behind the pin and spun back straight into the cup. David started jumping around yelling and screaming but I was kind of stunned and just stood there. I mean, I saw the ball zip back toward the hole and disappear in the cup but I don’t know if I was ready to believe I’d actually had a hole in one. I’ve come close before but I’d never even seen anyone else get one so I’d kind of resigned myself to the possibility that I’d never get one. I mean, I never expected to get one. I’ll just take the birdie... hahaha. The grounds crew had been behind us all day covering the greens as we left each green. They heard David yelling and they started yelling too. After the round we recounted the event for the guys in the pro shop and bar. I tried to buy a round of drinks but the manager/owner Bill wouldn’t have it and insisted on buying our drinks. Bill then proceeded to show us some of the original drawings that Stranz made when planning the course. The drawings were a gift to the course from Stranz’ widow and they are incredible. All in all, what an amazing Christmas gift from the golf gods!
