How do you really get better at golf?

    How do you get better? It's really simple, you find a competent PGA instructor, and you establish a long term relationship. You establish a plan and implement the plan. You work on your swing, and only when you discover your swing plane/swing path do you invest in fitting and new clubs. I'm a member at 2 clubs, and there are about 20 guys that can really play in my little circle. 90% of them have a teacher. Great golf doesn't just happen, it takes a lot of work. Last night my Head Pro was on the range with his guy tinkering with something, he has a Tee Time Thursday at Quail Hollow. The journey never ends!

    What do lessons usually cost? I don’t want to waste my money or over pay for a lesson that might not help.

    Lessons "only help" if you are willing to put in the time to PRACTICE what the instructor is helping you with. Lessons run around $100 an hour at most courses, depending on the level of expertise. There are no short cuts to improving your game. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort on your own. You will only get out of it, what you put into it. Some only go for the lesson and then go play and say, nothing is helping me. Your choice.

    You can find a pga professional in your area. The PGA website has a find a coach search. you can look at teaching professionals near you and they'll have their location and rates all listed. Im sure you can find a package with multiple lesson sessions that are pretty affordable.

    Rylan, probably every course you play will have a golf pro there. Seek them out and talk to them. If you don't want to try lessons at the course, try a place like Golftec. They had a swing evaluation for $95. I went there and really enjoyed the experience. Golf Galaxy and the PGA Superstore also have guys/gals that give lessons. As everyone has said, the lessons will only help you as long as you put the time in to practice what they show you.

    Rylan, if you have never had a lesson, I would urge you to find a PGA teaching pro. At a minimum, sound fundamentals, grip, stance, alignment are crucial. A set of trained eyes can do wonders to help you make sure these are sound.

    I agree with everything that has been said so far. The biggest problem I have is that I did not take lessons early on and developed bad habits. We all know those are hard to break. Lessons are great with the right instructor but you definitely have to put in the work after the lessons.

    This is me too. Wish I would have had lessons years ago. Baseball/softball swing still shows it's ugly head to me a few times a round. My bad habits have been very hard to get rid of.

    I'm an agreement with pretty much everything said, find a great instructor early. If you don't, you will develop habits that may feel natural but is hurting your game, only a instructor who knows what there doing is helpfull. Also you should figure out how much your willing to sacrifice to get better, and how far do you want to go. Overall, practice is the best, but if you have never had a coach, like everyone already said, get one quick. Lessons depending on pro varies, expect to pay anywhere from 50-100 an hour for a decent coach, to 100-300 bucks for a more qualified pro. Make sure they know what there doing.

    After getting a lesson , remember that " the secret is in the dirt" , practice what the instructor gives you to work on its all steps to being better

    2 biggest (sporting) mistakes in my life - not taking lessons for downhill skiing or golf when I started.

    At least I didn’t buy ski equipment.
