    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, and i'm looking for some advice on the makeup of clubs in my bag. I've been away from the game for ~10yrs (i previously played off a handicap of 4).

    I've purchased a 910F 15deg and have a 910D3 9.5deg on order.

I've also purchased two vokey wedges: 60(04) and 56(11).

I'm looking at ordering AP2 irons (3-PW), but would like some council on using a 910H (19 or 21).

If i use the hybrid, i can either: a) leave the 3 iron in, or b) take it out and put a gap wedge in. How common is using a 4 wedge setup? or should i space the sand/gap wedge differently to accommodate only 3 wedges?

Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Jamie.

It is a personal preference.  I was in the same boat as you.  I was a 4 handicap and then did not get a golf scholarship so I got away from the game for a while.  Now I try to play 2 times a month at minimum and I am back to an 8.

I use a 3 bag now because I do not have a lot of time to practice and it was easier to get used to those than having 4 in the bag.  I use the PW and I have a 53 and 58.  It has been working really well.  When I used to play a lot, I used the 4 wedges and it worked really well for me.

So, I added a 19 Hybrid to make a full bag.  I like it a lot.

It can also depend on where you play and how long of a course it is.  If you are always playing a long course and you are not an exceptionally long hitter, then I would suggest the Hybrid.  It can go both was though, I play on a relatively short course and I hit long, but I still enjoy my hybrid for tee shots and shaping some shots.

This is just my 2 cents.  May be okay for you or not.

As the Voke says, you should only have a 4*-6* gap between all your wedges. If you're just getting back into it see how you feel about the gap between your PW and your SW. AP2 PW I think is at 47* so if you're SW is 56*, there's a 9* gap there, which is a little too much over recommended. I'm not sure how much you'll be hitting the 3 iron at your home course so you might benefit more from a GW than a 3 iron. Do you even need a 3 iron? I've got a 2 and 3 hybrid in the bag, and I currently play a 47*, 53* and 58* wedge setup similar to Joey R. Sometimes I'll take the 2 hybrid out and put a 62* in my bag. This setup works great for me. But see how you feel about your gaps. I've tightened my gaps with the longer irons because I'm really trying to hit par 5's in 2 more accurately, and because I'm ok with hitting a 3/4 PW instead of a full GW.

I have a bit of an unusual setup. 1-3-7 woods (2K7 Burner), 28.5 deg lofted fairway wood (persimmon 10 wood), 34 hybrid (persimmon),6-PW (Eye 2 green dot), 54-11 c-c, 60-07, 64-07 and putter (White Hot). There is 15 yards between clubs from the 3 wood to 10 wood and 6 iron. 10 yards between clubs from the 6-PW. The gap between full shots from PW-SW-LW is 20 yards. 10 yards between the LW and XW. No problem with gaps - I am pretty good at working clubs (you learn that when carrying a starter set for 7 years). I found out I fared better with a 7 wood vs a 3 or 4 hybrid in 2006 (when I took the game up after a 3 year hiatus) - I had played with 1-3-4, 2-PW and Dual Wedge basically since 1972 (used 3-5-7-9 irons between 1972-1979) and I even carried a traditional 1 iron in the 1980s. Ditto with using a lofted fairway wood vs a 5 or 6 hybrid. I hit the hybrids fine but get better distance with less work on the wood. I've carried a 9 wood or 11 wood since 2006. I've carried a 4 wedge setup since 2006. I discovered all the neat things one can do with a 64 degree wedge from 40 yards and less. I was using a 58 in 2006-2009 because it made the short game simple but the limitation was long bunkers and tight lies near the green. I also got into clubmaking in 2009 and constructed a set of irons (5-LW). Quite frankly, a gap wedge (except for the P2) has really not been of added value. One is that the Snake Eyes Q3 set didn't come with one and I learned how to work my PW and SW. My irons are "old school" (more lofted vs new and the PW is 50 deg) so no need for a GW.

Changed the lofted fww to SQ 5/26 hybrid. Eye green dots were flattened to yellow and are in the process of a reshaft (been playing DCI 981 6-PW for 2 months now). Vokey wedges are Spin-Milled c-c (54-11 bent to 55 and 62-07). I traded the 60-07 and 64-07 for the 62-07 (the 62 is more versatile than both the 60 and 64).

I would look at putting a hybrid or two in play over the longer irons, but like others have said, that is a personal preference.  I will say that both the 909 and 910 hybrids are great.  And, you can find the 909s right now on sale at most golf shops.

I've actually pretty much done that, except I hit a 7 wood instead of a 21H (mainly because I find a fairway wood much easier to hit vs a long hybrid). I carry a 5H, mainly because I hit it 5-10 yards farther than a 5 iron. Also I have a 34 deg persimmon hybrid and a 2 way chipping iron to make the 13th and 14th clubs. I got the persimmon hybrid mainly because I have had an "approach wedge" hybrid in my bag since 2007 and because it is something that nobody carries. There is a benefit of an "approach wedge" hybrid - hitting out of rough, fairway bunkers. I can hit the 34H anywhere from 140-160 on a full swing (ranging from a fully choked grip to a standard grip), can pitch it from 110-130 yd.... well.... you get the picture.

I probably got off on a tangent when responding.... Since my other post about my setup (where I had 1-3-7 woods, 28 deg fww... Eye 2 Green Dot irons), I acquired a set of DCI 981 irons 4-GW (I use the 6-PW but can hit the 4-5 irons), had them fit and have been using them with good success the past two months. I still have the Eye 2s but am awaiting some shafts to complete a re-shaft project (I do a lot of my own club work, except lie and loft; I leave lie angle and loft to clubfitters). Then I'll re-evaluate vs the Titleists. The point I was making is sometimes one needs to get creative with his/her game to score well. Also, sometimes less is more. For instance, my minimum setup is 11 clubs (1-7 wood, 5H, 6-PW, 54-11 and 62-07) - I carry a 3 wood when the course I am playing has par 3s greater than 190 yd (the fairways are a bit tight on the courses I play and I am also capable of hitting the 7 wood 200 yds off the fairway). When I was using the Eye 2s, I carried the 34H in place of the 6 and 7 irons because of a distance anomaly (the 7 iron hit 3 yd less than the 8 and the 6 was only 5 yd more than the 8).

The tangent wasn't in this discussion (I got it and one about shankitis mixed up).

I've been pretty used to a PW and SW combo of 47 and 55-12 for some time now. I personally didn't find a gap wedge of added value. The only hole I have is between the choked full swing and full pitch of the PW - simple: pitch with a 9 iron or use a square stance full pitch with the PW. The filling of the hole is also to take a full swing with the SW but I generally limit use of the SW and XW to pitching (less risky).
