  1. Looking for a little help.... I am going to buy the910 d3 Driver, I tried one with ahina 72 S,( 3.2 tq, mid to high flex ) Loved the club but consistanty drove it a tad to low and with a decent fade to it.... Currently im using a r9 with voodoo svs( pretty much same spec's as ahina) and fade this club also but, with a higher ball flight.

Swing speed is around 95 to 98 easy tempo....  Im looking to go with the Ilima X stiff ( 59 grm, 3.9 tq. low to mid flex)

Im hoping to promote more of a draw and keep ball flight somewhere in the middle.... Any opinions OUT there???

    thanks

I would go lower torque and try the Aldila RIP 60 stiff.  It's a Titleist measured 2.9 versus 3.2 from the Ahina.

  3. ryan, thanks for your response, but im a bit confused.... the thought the lower TQ go's hand and hand with the shafts for higher

swing speeds?? Titleist website shows the higher TQ shaft Ilima promoting more of a draw compared to the lower TQ Ahina, especially at lower swing speeds.... Its CLEAR Ryan You know a hell of lot more than I, so please try to educate me a little on WHY

you recommend the lower TQ Aldila rip....

    thank you,

    Jim

No worries!  In my experience and research, I believe torque is the number one factor contributing to a players perception of the shaft followed by a close tie with weight and stiffness.  In general, shafts contribute 20% of ball performance while the clubface contributes 80%.  However, the ratio is reversed during the buying process.  Regardless of performance, players will only buy something that feels right in addition to optimal performance.

Torque is simply the measurement of how a shaft twists.  Higher torque...more twisting, lower torque...less twisting.

Assuming you have the exact same swing, here's how torque affects the club face.

If a shaft has 4.0 of torque, it will lag 4.0 open through impact.

If a shaft has 2.0 of torque, it will lag 2.0 open through impact.

So if you have less torque, the clubface may be easier to close therefore promoting a draw.

Trackman is definitely the best tool to examine the phenomenon since it measures path and face angle.  When you begin testing, hopefully you'll be under the watchful eye of a fitter and the crosshairs of Trackman.

  5. Thanks Ryan,

Very interesting... So Wouldn't the club head close quicker as you release through impact? ( Higher torque) I didnt think of it that way before but, I can see how the shaft on the down swing momentum would twist open with higher TQ, but also could imagine it to close more rapidly as you release your hands????

It will always depend on how the player uses his hands. A good example is twisting a steel pipe versus a jump rope. The whole pipe will twist (low toque) and the other handle on the rope won't budge...or lag. Go experiment by alternating shafts every two shots and see what happens. Then report back!

Hi Ryan- I've been reading through some old discussions relative to shafts for the D3 because I've been battling a weak fade with my d3 kaili 60g stiff. I particularly read your explanation of torque with keen interest, because I know the kaili has a high torque and I was wondering if this is contributing to my weak fade. Also this set up just doesn't feel solid at impact. My typical ball flight is slight draw or straight. My swing speed is 97 -100, and ball speed 145. My tempo is smooth although I really like to be aggressive on some drives. On a recent biz trip I killed some time at a driving range (oxmoor valley!!) and was hitting a demo d3 with ahina 72 s. I hit over 75 balls and only a handful were to the right, and those were just blocks not that typical fade. All the other shots were nice draws. This ahina set up felt really solid. This week I tried the Rip 60 s with a d3 (indoor w/ launch monitor). This combo felt solid as well especially thru impact. The monitor didn't show much right side spin. Last year I visited TPI Oceanside for an ap2 fitting, and also to review the d3 set up. The kaili was the winner that day, but don't remember trying the rip or ahina. Do you think the kaili torque could be the issue here? Greatly appreciate your feedback. Regards- Dominic

You really need to go somewhere that has a launch monitor, hopefully a Trackman, and get something that will optimize your #'s for optimal launch angle, ball speed, etc... It makes a WORLD of difference.

I wouldn't recomend going to an x-stiff. Maybe try a Kai'Li 65 in an S flex see if that gets the ball flight up just alittle bit more.

Go get fitted. They will put you on a launch monitor and find the best shaft/setting combo for you!
