I've been disappointed with my wedge play for way too long. My new set of AP1s includes a pitching wedge (48) and a gap wedge (52), and I'm a big fan of the gap wedge since I've never had one before. What I need is a sand wedge and lob wedge. I splurged for some Titleist Vokeys a few years back, the Spin Milled variety, a 56 sand and a 60 lob. Man, what a disappointment. I couldn't hit them worth a damn. A pro recommended that I try a more forgiving cavity-back model, so I traded in the Vokeys and bought a 55 sand and 59 lob. Not much better. I'd like to give the Vokeys a shot again. My thinking is that I didn't get the right bounce the first time around. I really didn't know what it was, to be honest.
When I was younger, I was more of a digger. But now, at 36, I'm more of a sweeper. Understand that I primarily need a sand wedge and lob wedge for trouble shots. I really don't like using them from the fairway 80 or 90 yards out for a full-swing approach shot. I'd rather just dial back a gap wedge. The sand and lob would be for bunker shots, lob shots and the like. I don't think I'm a candidate at all for high-bounce wedges since I'm not a digger and wouldn't classify myself as a "shotmaker." But I'm also hesitant to buy low-bounce wedges out of fear that I'll hit everything fat. Do I assume incorrectly?
I'm a decent player, in the 80s when I'm having a good day -- far from scratch but not a hack, either. I feel pretty good about every club in my bag right now except sand and lob, so I'd love to get some advice. I appreciate all the input I can get.
