I currenly play the Titleist 731 PM's.  I have had these irons since 2003.  The reason that I bought these "player's type" irons was because back in 2003 I was playing to a 4 handicap and liked the feel and workability.

Since then I have lost touch with the game and am now looking to get back into playing more.  When I went out to hit some balls I noticed that these 731 irons are just too tough for me to hit now.  My question is what set of Irons would you recomend that I purchase?  I can still hit the ball pretty good but just not as consistent.  My plan is to start playing much more and hopefully get back to shooting some good scores.  I am a huge Titleist fan so the new irons will definitely be Titleist. Just which set?

Of course I will go and get fitted correctly.

I hit my 7 Iron approx 165 and I have a very high ball flight.

    Cheers,

    MG

  2. Obviously, if you got fitted by an Authorized Titleist Rep, he/she, would be able to dial you in to the EXACT irons for YOUR game.

The new AP2's are amazing. They have the workability of blades, yet, the forgiveness of cavity backs. When you do decide to get fitted, let us know how everything turns out! Good luck!

    MG,

If you are getting fitted, try them all but you cannot go wrong with the AP2 in my opinion.  I absolutely love these irons.  Let us know how it turns out.

Sounds good. Will the AP2's be more forgiving than my current 731 pm's?

    Thanks for the feedback.

I'm the same. 10 years ago, i could break 80 on nice courses from the tips. Now I'm struggling to get back into the game. i had two shoulder surgeries and other issues, But now that I'm back, I want to get back to where I was. i can't stand not hitting the ball well. I took 2 lessons and am now hitting my irons well. I play 990s and have no real trouble hitting them once i took the lessons. My driver is another story. i have the 907 D2 with a Grafflaloy Blue shaft. It's not the problem I am. I think that if you just practice some, you'll hit the 731s just fine. I'm also a lefty and had those for awhile, but didn't like the strong lofts. Good luck to you.

I hear ya.  It is definitely more the person than the clubs.  I actually prefer the stronger lofts as I hit the ball so high in the air.  I just want to get something that may help boost my confidence a bit while I am getting back into it. But I agree, Nothing is better than a bucket of balls a day to groove that swing back to its original form!

I hit the ball low myself. My driver has an 8.5 loft. when I get lucky and draw it nowadays, it goes about 20 feet off the ground and rolls a good distance. i want to hit it higher. maybe get a little more carry out of it? in june, where i take lessons, they're having a demo day. I'm going to try and get fitted there for a 910 driver. we'll see how it goes? The stronger lofts in irons aren't so bad nowadays with wedges being better. I have 4 cleveland cg 12 wedges. A 48, 52, 56 and 60. (i leave my 3 iron out of the bag.) I hit my 56 about 90 yards, and my 60 about 70 yards. I f i buy new clubs, i may go to a 50 degree and 58 degree. i should be able to cover the gaps with that?

Yes, I like your set up.  You seem to have all of the gaps covered.  I have a bit of a jump right now from my PW (45) to My GW (52) but I seem to get away with it.  I am working on choking down on my PW and hitting lower, more controlled wedge shots.  After some practice with this, I hope to be able to have better distance control from 150 yards and in.   Once I get a new set of irons and have the weaker lofts, [i.e PW (47)] this should help with distance control and also hitting full clubs into greens.

I've never been down to a 4, but I love the feel of my AP2s.  It's a great set.  I would suggest you go get fit.  Nothing like hitting a bucket full of clubs and picking your favorite. Good luck, and welcome back to golf.

One of the things that I don't like about strong lofts is that your PW is 45 degrees and your 3 iron is the same as your old 3 iron. Then they want you to buy a gap wedge? Why don't you make a PW that's a PW, and stop calling my 9 iron a PW then I wouldn't need to  buy a gap wedge?

Very true.  When it comes down to it, it's all about the loft on the club head and the length of the shaft that is going to make a difference, not the number on the bottom of the club.
