I just ordered a set of new AP2 irons. I haven't received them yet, I was wondering what others preference was as far as pros and cons to ordering the AP2 gap wedge, or playing with a Vokey 52 degree? Any opinion or info would be appreciated. Thanks

Go Vokey 52 degree. I've shot both and have almost made pro scores with the vokey.
Cheers. See you on the course with some beers in hand.

That's probably a matter of personal preference.
For instance, a Vokey 48 degree wedge has a shaft length of 35.75", which is 1/4" longer than the 9 iron or PW in most sets.

It's a very personal decision! From a performance standpoint, the AP2 will fly slightly higher and possibly spin more. That could be good for your game.
The Vokey should fly slightly lower.
We have just as many players pick the matching Wedge in the AP1/AP2 versus the Vokey Gaps.

I am not familiar with the AP2 wedge. However, if you ever decided to go with different irons from the AP2 irons, you would still have a matching set of wedges if they were all Vokey. I personally like to have my wedges the same. In fact, if pitching wedges did not come standard with set, I would also make that the same as my lob, SW, and Gap. Of course you have to make a difference somewhere, don't you?

Like RC said its more of a personal decision. and a personal evaluation of what shots your going to use it for. if its mostly full shots i would probably advertise the ap2 since most players tend to swing full with set irons. if you plan to chip and use it around the green side maybe a volkey is the answer. i would try them both out and see what your personal prefrence is.

Yeah, I know it's going to differ person to person, I just haven't been able to track down the AP2 wedge to try. So I was just wondering if anyone else had made the same decision, or what they had seen as being the difference, likes, dislikes, whatever. Or the main difference in choosing between the two, like RC said.
Thanks

The vokey wedges have a better feel. I even took out my AP2 PW and replaced it with a 48.06 vokey wedge and had it bent 2* strong so I would loose any yardage. So glad I made that switch

Brian,
How is the Vokey working out? I am about to order the new 712 and can't decide between the gap or vokey? On full swings, did you lose yards on the vokey? Thanks for you feedback.
Rick
Hey Rick,
It took me awhile to find the W wedge for the AP2 set, but I find it at golfandski warehouse one weekend. I had them on the range side by side for quite a few bells. The main thing I noticed, was that I was having more errant shots with the AP2 wedge. Now I had just purchased the AP2's, so at the time, I thought this was definitely a bad thing. I got the Vokey, and have been very happy, I'll get back to this later.
However, after getting very comfortable with my pitching wedge, I think it would have been much easier to work the ball with the AP2 wedge. The feel of the AP2's is incredible, its very smooth. I definitely think the Ap2 would have been very much easier to spin as well, judging from the results with my 9 iron and pitching wedge.
With the vokey, it's like throwing lawn darts, its incredibly consistent, very straight. I can always count on it to do the same thing. It just hits the green, and sticks. I wouldn't say that the 9 and P are like this, I can definitely hit some bad shots with those clubs.
I went with the 52 degree vokey to start, instead of the AP2 W. I have since added a 56 and a 60 degree vokey. If it helps, I also made my first hole in one earlier this year with that same 52 from 125 yds.
So, if you want more spin, workability, distance...I'd go with the Ap2 wedge.
If you'd rather have accuracy, consistency, and more use in the short game, id go Vokey.
I know I'm only one golfer, but this was the answer I was looking for when I asked the question. Hopefully this helps.

I wouldn't think the club would have anything to do with consistency. Maybe the shaft, but definitely not the clubhead. I find the exact opposite of what you just posted. The AP2 W wedge is pretty much as good as it gets compared to my vokey 52. I stopped using the vokey 52 for that reason. I don't hit pitch shots or anything less than 120 with it, as it's a 120-140 club so maybe that's were we our differing....or maybe that isn't.
Also, as far as spinning a club, that's all about the swing. I can stop a club from the 90s on a dime and can spin back 30 yard shots (using a 2010 vokey ofc). I'm just saying this bc as other posters posted, it's all preference. What may work for one person may not work for another.
Anyways, I'm glad you found out what worked for you!

I have been looking for an AP2 gap ("W") wedge everywhere and cannot find one. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

It is unlikely you will see one in a pro shop because the AP2 gap wedge is a custom order. You will have to order it through an authorized pro shop or retailer.
I recently picked up a Vokey Spin-Milled 50-08 wedge (used) with the intent of having the same W wedge regardless of whether I used my DCI 981 or Eye 2 irons. After a shootout with the Eye 2 W (48.5), I decided to set up the 50-08 as a gap wedge because it was better around the greens vs the Eye 2 but the latter was better on longer pitch shots and full golf shots (and I hated to leave either out). I bent it to 51 deg (making it 51-09, effectively). Practiced long bunker shots in soft sand and the extra degree of bounce made it easier to hit. Friday' golf game was successful because I had par saves on 3 holes with both the Eye 2 W and the Vokey 50. If you want to really go bonkers, you can set up the 50-08 as a 52-10 but 2* of loft adjustment may be a risk of breakage. You can also set up the 50-08 as a PW by bending the loft to 49 (making it 49-07). It is also a lot easier to use than the 48-06 because it has a shorter shaft.
Since my last post, I have changed my irons to AP1 7-PW. I still have the Vokey 50-08 and 54-11 (both bent 1* weak to increase bounce). I also got an SM3 54-14 and SM4 60-10 that I bent both 1* strong to decrease the bounce and also simplify my wedge setup, along with more versatility for varying course conditions.
I also played with a DIY set PW and SW (47 and 55), both cavity back GI irons and the SW actually outperformed quite a few specialty wedges. These and the SM2 60-07 and 64-07 proved to be a rather deadly scoring combo. The difference between my Vokey 54-11 and the set 55 was 5 yards. Even between the 50-08 and my Eye 2 set W (48.5) there was a difference of 10 yards.

Today's golf game went well but a 49* gap wedge would have been nice for my last approach shot (tight lie and a lot of green - AP1 PW would have rolled over; the SW stopped a bit short). So off to the fitter to tweak my 50-08 (35 1/4" length, 49* loft).

I have the ap2 712's 4-pw and 50, 54, and 58 degree vokey sm4's. I chose the vokey 50 because its a much more versatile wedge in my opinion. It's much easier to flight down and use for 3/4 shots. I also use it for bump and runs every once in a while. If you plan to use it for only full shots, then the ap2 GW may be better for you.

The Vokey 50-08 (I have the Spin Milled cc) is a great wedge. Actually, if you bend it to 49 and cut the shaft to 35 1/4, it comes out to the same swingweight as a 48-06 bent 1* weak but with a shaft 1/2" shorter. It is awesome for bump n run shots and I used it as a PW for the Eye 2s (9 iron is 45*) and now it is a GW for the AP1s.

I Would not trust a wedge that comes in an irons set to be as good as something that specializes like the vokey and I have a vokey and it is great, as good if not better than the Cleveland wedges. All in all I would go with the vokey

I currently play the AP2 712 with the 51 degree stock wedge along with a 54 and 58 SM4. I noticed that i hit the stock wedge about 10 yards farhter than i do with with my previous 52 degree wedge . If you tend to have a lot of 100-130 yard shots i would recomend getting the 52 in the Vokey along with a 56 and/or 60. I hit my 54 about 100 yards and the stock 51 about 120, it took a while to dial in the 110 yard shot. But it would be easiest to not have the gap and get the Vokey. Nad the vokey 52 wedge is cheaper than the stock AP2 wedge!

The difference between the Ap2 Gap and the vokey is basically a matter of where you need more spin and where you need less, the fact of the matter is that most golfers that hit a pure shot from 80-120 yards are going to have enough spin on it to make it stop (unless you are playing US open greens). I found with the AP2 Gap i can spin it just fine from the fairway at 100 yards and when i get in close about 30 yards i love chipping my Ap2 gap to a back pin its just easier with the vokey you have to worry about where it is going to spin and how hard it will check, the AP2 gap does not check its so predictable its awesome. If I need a shot to spin i use my vokey 56 or 60. The AP2 just allows me to hit a pitch that i would hit with my pitching wedge to be brought in a little higher and softer.
