Ap2 Irons being easily dented

  1. I recently bought a brand new set of ap2 irons and have only played 1 round of golf.  After the round I was cleaning them and noticed smalled dents in them.  They could have possible come from tapping other clubs in my bag as i walked put the contact would have been very light.  That brings me to my question; are the ap2 supposed to have very soft metal and dent real easy or is there somthing wrong with my set?

Not sure if I would be correct in saying it is soft, as I am no metalargist; however, AP2 are forged clubs and you always have to be careful with them, because they will show dings - especially from bouncing around in a cart.  I have played forged clubs for about 10 years - after I played them once, I couldn't go back to cast irons - and I have had good success at taking care of my forged clubs without iron covers, but a lot of people recommend them to keep forged clubs looking newer longer.

Fairly confident there is nothing wrong with your set.....

Welcome to the forged club :)

It is made from a soft metal. They will get what we like to call "bag chatter" this is when they collide with other clubs in the bag as you make your way around the course.  Completely natural and nothing to worry about. Besides it adds character! ha!

Its just bag chatter...........the clubs are getting to know one another, Thats all. They all do it. LOL

I bought iron covers for mine. They are cleaned after every shot and the covers replaced.

They still look new after a year.

AP2 Titleist; "High quality, high technology design and construction featuring a forged steel body, tungsten nickel box and Tuned Feel System enhances performance and feel."

The Tungsten sole is hard, approx 80-90 Rockwell C. As for the forged soft steel body the hardness is approx 50-60 rockwell B. Large difference in hardness.

So I assume your observing the dings on the body. Suggest using "clubglove" easy on easy off iron covers.

I do the same as T.Tiger above.  My AP2s also look almost brand new after over 70 rounds.  Some people like the dinged up look.  I personally do not spend a lot of money for my clubs to look bad and old.  I got a set of neoprene iron covers and they work great.  I do not even have to think about taking the covers on and off, its now second nature.  I do wish Titleist made some iron covers though.

A little bag chatter builds a bit of character and does not affect performance.  I also like the gentle rhythm that my clubs play as I walk down a quiet fairway.  And iron covers are just too geeky for my taste, and just slow down the game.  J.A.C.

Iron covers do not slow down the game one bit.  Taking off a cover while walking a step or 2 to your ball takes ZERO extra time.  The gentleman who started the post was asking about the "bag clatter" he is receiving and finds he does not want the damage.  And while bag clatter MAY not affect performance it really does re-sale if he decides to sell his clubs for a newer set of irons later.  I really realize sometimes how much less money I make then many other golfers.  When I pay $1000 for a set of irons I expect them to last and look like new.  When I noticed someone dinged my car while I was in the store I do not say "well that adds character."  Maybe someday I will make enough money to let my clubs look terrible slapping around in the bag.  And at that point I might be able to buy a new set or 2 every year. But right now I work way to hard for my money and I guess that is just to geeky for some.  But back to the original posters question, you can accept bag clatter like some or you can use iron covers, that despite what some believe, do not slow down play even one second.

I've found aftermarket 'Titleist' iron covers on eBay. I only use them for transporting my bag to and from the course and for storage purposes.
