  1. This is my first year of golf and am acquiring clubs little by little. I have a set of Super Steel Burner clubs and a King LD speed driver that were my grandfathers. I am wondering if a new set of irons or a new driver will be that more forgiving. I hit my driver 240-280yds and have about a 45-47 average on 9 holes. Any advice would help. Thanks

  2. hmm its tough to say because its your first year. Seems like your getting your driver out there already. If your around 20 handicap then id say your doing just fine. Even though technology has grown immensely your swing is still paramount. New clubs will not shave strokes off your game. Once you get confident with swinging a golf club consistently then id think about it. At this point your playing to a 20 handicap which is great in the first year. Keep at it.

The driver is probably 8 years or more old and the irons are somewhere around that age or older. If you're hitting bogey with no lessons and a memorial set of clubs, great start. In the last 3 years, there have been great strides in forgiveness across the bag, so if you want to stay with it, consider upgrades. Find a pro that also fits. The 2 of you can plot when and what clubs you should move up to.

First let me welcome you to the wonderful world of golf. There is no better sport in my view. I stared playing about 20 years ago and I had hand me down clubs. Then I upgraded, and my scores got better. I went from about a 20 hcp to a 12. The modern equipment today is even better. This year I took the advice of many TT members and had my first club fitting with a Titleist fitting professional. I filled my bag with all titleist equipment. Best investment in the game of golf since the purchase of my range finder. I am now a 5 hcp. If you can afford it my suggestion would be spend the money and get fitted. You will not be disappointed. Good luck.

With the new technology it would be safe to say that a new set of clubs would be more forgiving. I would recommend going to see a Titleist certified fitter and see what he recommends. The AP1 irons are a very forgiving set of irons. The fitter will take a look at your swing, and based on a numbers of factors, recommend what would work best for you, to include club head and shaft and grip. Do yourself a favor, see a fitter and make your game more fun.

    Tell us about your -misses-.

Are you tracking your stats? You'll want to see how often you miss left, right, and short when approaching the green, as well as your driving tendencies.

What about your ball flight? Do you hit the ball high, or does it fly low and run out?
