  1. I have just turned 83 and have had the same set of Adams clubs for ten years. Of course I have added Super S's along the way. All shafts are graphite except for sand iron and lob wedge. Keep the ball in the fairway - known as "power fade". Tee shots 210 yards+ with the Super S set at 10.5. Adjust other club distances as necessary. Handicap jumped to from 22 to 27 when I moved to the senior/gold tees.

Should I stay with these clubs or look for a new set? In good health and play in a league once a week and any other time I get a call.

If you can find a course near you that has the Titleist Thursday fittings still going on, sign-up for the free fitting. It would be a great way to see if you would benefit from getting new clubs.

First, let me say, you inspire me. 83 and considering new irons. 210+ off the tee. Fantastic. I love it. I want to be you when I'm 83. I hope you are playing for many many more years.

As far as new clubs, there have been many positive design changes in clubs over the past ten years of which you could probably take some advantage. Certainly in hybrids. And in Game Improvement irons. Adams made great GI irons and hybrids 10 years ago, but unfortunately, they are now a shadow of what they once were. The new Titleist AP1s with Senior flex graphite shafts would be a great place to start. Take your old irons to a fitter and compare them with the AP1s set up with the right shafts. I bet you will see an increase in distance as well as the same, or more, forgiveness.

I happen to know another guy who is 84 and plays 3 times a week (or more), who is also amazing. He just moved up to the front tees last year. He continues to be competitive, playing against much younger guys with mid-low handicaps. I think he is now around a 15. He plays a Titleist 913 D2 driver if that means anything to you. I would certainly try one with a senior shaft while you are at the fitter falling in love with those new AP1s.

Keep your optimistic outlook and determination to play better moving forward. Good luck and play well.

  4. Thanks for the kind words, Doug. Our son plays all Titleists. I have an idea about the club you mentioned. I'll check it out.
