I use a plastic tee to clean them , but is there something better to use while on the course?

Golf Smith has a very small nylon brush you can Cary in your front pocket. I love it bought a hand full and passed them out to all my golf buddies.

I have a cleaning brush that hangs on my bag with nylon bristles on one side and steel on the other. I find that works a lot better than just a tee. The brushes are easy to find at almost any golf shop.

I second that one! I have the same brush and it works really well. About the size of a quarter and fantastic for cart path only rounds.

I also use a plastic tee to clean them, but in the all kind of shops you can buy small brushes, which are specially for that
