Got my new 714 AP1's on Weds. Initial impressions are excellent. I've been using the 710 AP1's for the past three years and have loved them. I didn't see enough of a difference in the 912's to make a switch. These on the other hand seemed like a real re-design and worth a shot. I'm 55 years old and a 9 handicap. I ordered these with the NS Pro 970 shafts, Stiff flex and soft stepped. Right out of the box I loved the look of them. The satin finish looks great. The faces give the impression of being a little thinner than my 910's at address, and maybe a tad longer from heel to toe. I was lucky enough to have a 60 degree day here in Central PA on Weds when they arrived, so out to the course I went. Hadn't played in over a month, so I wasn't expecting much. I just wanted to get a sense for feel and launch. Due to carpal issues in my wrists, I had put sensicore inserts in my 710's, so I anticipated a slightly harsher feel with these new 714's. First swing from the fairway with a 9 iron, I was quite surprised. A nice high launch - higher than expected, and straight. And the feel was really smooth, no harshness at all. A few more balls with the 9 iron from the same spot and I got the same result - high, and dead straight. Nice! On the second hole I had an 8 iron in, and got the same result. Third hole, par 3, a 7 iron and again, the same shot, same feel. I dropped a few balls on the next fairway, par 5 and hit some 5 and 6 irons. No problem. Even hitting a few of them a little off the toe, I didn't lose much distance, and still hit them straight. While Titleist has tweaked the lofts on the 7 thru wedge 1 degree, I didn't notice any more distance. Though strengthening them 1 degree would only gain a few yards anyway. And it may be that the cool weather and breeze, and the sweater I was wearing might have contributed to not gaining any distance. I didn't have my 710's with me to do an A/B test to compare. That will have to wait until next Spring I suppose, as I'm not confident of another 60 degree day here until then. But from this initial testing I am really happy with the 714's. They are a great looking iron, with a players look at address. They have a great feel throughout the set, and are very forgiving. I think Titleist hit a home run with these.
