The serial number on 909 fairways is engraved on the hosel away from the face. I do recall having checked in some early release five woods in the 910 series that did not have serial numbers though. I called Titleist and the database had not generated numbers before the heads had completed production. If you are concerned about authenticity, it's fairly easy to confirm that by comparing it to another 909 that has a stock Titleist shaft and serial number. There is a much lower chance of it being counterfeit compared to a driver.

I will compare the club today with a stock Titleist at a official Titleist fitter. I compared it with pictures from known golfsites and I couldn't see the difference. The club was purchased from a guy who did reviews of the club, so it could be a pre production version.
