    Hi,

i cant decide what irons i should get.  I'm a fourteen year old with a handicap of 15.  I hit the ball vary well and would be a 7 handicap if i was better around the greens. I hit the ball a bit lower than i would like with my long irons.  My friend suggested halving AP2 for the 9,8,7, and 6 irons and AP2 for the 5 and six irons.  I'm worried if i do this it will affect my distances too much and my gap may be large or small between my 6 and 5 iron.  Dose anyone know what the difference in distance is between the AP1 and AP2 irons?

    thanks

I recently switched from Investment cast cavity backs to AP2's and I was amazed at how much better I hit the ball.  I went to a Titleist  fitting center and the custom fitting has made all the difference in the world for hitting the ball on the sweet spot. Before the fitting, I was playing in clubs i bought 15!years ago and they were 1 degree upright. After the fitting, I was sized for 2 degrees flat, with a length of 1/4 inch over standard.  To help me get the ball in the air, especially, with long irons, I went with a Dynamic Gold XP shaft that has a softer tip than the regular dynamic gold. I would not recommend playing two different heads, especially since one is a forged blade and the other investment cast.  The difference in feel is significant.  have the 4 iron and play a 2 &3 hybrid.  Id rather see you play 2,3 and 4 hybrids than two different irons.  I picked up 10 yards in distance with my AP2's.  fFind a place with a fitting cart and try that  DG XP shaft!

The loft difference is 2* and that might be about a 5 yard difference.  Just to give an idea....  I had a set of Eye 2 irons and DCI 981 (these have the same loft as AP2) - I saw a 5 yard increase between the DCI 981 9 iron vs the Eye 2 9 iron and the AP1 PW hit the same distance as the Eye 2 9 iron.

Was that AP2 for 6-9 irons and AP1 for the 5 iron?  Or AP2 for 7-9 irons and AP1 for 5 and 6?

I think your friend is getting a little too technical, and I think you should definitely stay with one set of irons through the bag, either AP1s or AP2s whichever you are fitted for.  If you struggle with the longer irons, try hybrids.   Having played i15s for the last 3 years I recently changed to AP1s.   I used to struggle with the long irons when using the i15s but the AP1s are superb, I have no hang ups whatsoever about pulling the 4 or 5 iron out, and they give me a good high ball flight. I have also gained around 10 yards with each club and they are so accurate even on mis-hits. They will help you hit more greens and take some pressure off your short game.  I am 55 years old currently playing off 11 handicap and hoping to be off single figures soon. I hope this is of help to you.

    Good luck.
