Prior to shipping an order, does Titleist spine and check the frequency of the shaft on all club(irons, hybrids, and woods)?

    Marc,

The Titleist Golf Club R&D group has conducted testing with tour and better players to compare performance between shafts that have been PURE'D and shafts that have not.  We have never been able to see or measure any performance difference whatsoever.  Therefore, we do not feel PURING adds any performance improvement or benefit.  The shafts that come in from different vendors have to fall within a tolerance as far as their frequencies go.  Meaning, if for whatever reason it doesn't test within a certain frequency, we will not build the club with that shaft.

Is that the reason why you don't offer the KBS tour 90 for your irons? If that is not the reason, I'm curious why.

    Greg,

Our R&D Team has a process to test certain shafts, and there can be multiple reasons certain shafts don't get approved.  That isn't the reason why that shaft wasn't approved though.

I hope you can share why it is not approved but if not, I understand. Thanks for your reply.

If I may be so bold to ask, what is the acceptable frequency tolerance?

Hi Cameron, I'm curious about this whole "frequency" concept. I play up in N.H. and we have a new director at our golf academy. At a recent pre-season members meeting he was introduced and spoke about a new frequency testing machine he had purchased to test all the equipment they were selling. He said they would be returning to manufacturers anything that doesn't meet spec. he also intimated that the manufacturers wouldn't be happy with him! I was down at the academy with my son on Sunday. My son just took delivery of a 910D2 driver, 910F 3-wood and 910H hybrid, all with stiff Project-X shafts. He got them through a local college golf team, of which he is a member. My son had his friend (who works there) test his "stiff" driver shaft and it appeared to be "regular". I saw the machine work: the shaft is clamped in and the operator flexes it down a few inches and lets it go and a measurement comes out. Is it that simple? I'm a bit shocked if we didn't get what he was fitted for. Any thoughts? Thanks, Pete

    Pete,

We test all of our shafts that come from the manufacturer and they need to be within a certain frequency or we won't build the clubs with those shafts.  The frequencies we work within are relative to the industry, but happens to be proprietary information.  If you do feel the shafts that he received happen to be more of a regular then a stiff, then we would really like to double check that shaft.  Please give us a call at 1-888-TITLEIST and I will certainly walk you through the process in getting those shafts back to us to test.

Thank you for your responses.  However, I find myself a bit confused.  If the details regarding frequency tolerance is proprietary information, how are we as consumers able to confirm the quality and specs of our investment without having to go thru the hassle and associated delays of returning the product to Titleist for testing?  Should the initial assessment of the actual flex rating be compared with published industry standards prior to seeking additional assistance from Titleist?

    Marc,

I was mistaken about the frequency information.  We can let you know what the frequency needs to be to fall within our tolerance, but you are correct when it should be close to what the shaft companies publish.  Meaning, what all the after market shaft companies are saying a stiff or regular flex should frequency out to be is what should fall within our tolerance.  If for whatever reason someone feels that the shaft doesn't frequency out to what it should be, we will take take the shaft in and replace it.  I hope I did some justice in explaining this, but if you still have any questions, feel free to contact me at 1-888-TITLEIST.

    Sincerely,

    Cameron
