  1. Hi,

I need some help on gaps between my wedges.

Do my gaps seem to work or do I need to change lofts?

     Im 15 year and a 3 HCP

I play a SM4 46.08 and 3 TM Z TP 51.07(Bent from 52.08) and 56.12 (Bent from 54.10) and this wedge is great with a bit extra bounce and sole in bunkers, then i have a 60.06, all in a smoke/black nickel finish.

    SM4 46.08       122y

    51.07                108y

    56.12                93y

    60.06                79y

    This is my gaps.

    /Christian

  2. They should all be 14-16yds apart and you are well within those limits. The only issue I see is the TM wedge. Just kidding. Good luck Christian

    Hey Christian,

My composition is a 47.08, 54.08 and a 62.07. I have no issues with gaps at all. I used to carry four wedges as well, but took one out so I could put a 3 iron in the bag. I don't think you need help on gaps, just work on hitting half shots more often and practice being able to hit 3-4 stock shots with each wedge, once you start practicing that a bit, your gaps will disappear and you might find that you only need 3 wedges.

I have 4 wedges but could play with 3.  I've had the 54-11 (bent to 55) and 62-07 for over a year now.  I've been using the 50-08 (bent to 51) for about 9 months now.  I got the 58-04 at the beginning of this year with the intent of using it for tight lies and found it plays like an old school sand wedge and does quite a bit of fun stuff around the green (such as pitching from a mound with a severe downhill lie).  I use my 50 and 58 90 percent out of all my wedges.   The way I play my short game, distance gaps aren't an issue - I rarely do full golf shots with the 54, 58 or 62 (this is the 60-80 yard range); pitching is much less work as is taking a shorter backswing with a less lofted club on a pitch.

Also, I played with a set of DIY irons that had only a PW (47) and SW (55) between 2009-early 2011.  I got pretty proficient at working the PW.  My 70-80 shot was to take a full swing with the SW or pitch the 9 (choke down 1/2" with either club for the 70 yard shot).  Point being made is that an 8* gap between wedges is not insurmountable - remember that the typical PW up till the 1980s was 50* and the typical SW was 57-58*.

Dave Pelz (www.pelzgolf.com) has some wonderful tips about distance control with wedges.

Your setup for gaps is good. I carry something similar. I have an Eye 2 9 iron (45*), and four Vokeys (50-08 bent to 51, 54-11 bent to 55, 58-04 and 62-07). As of late, probably about 99 percent of my short game has been the 9 iron, 50 and 58 (this is actually how you play "old school" golf and I have been getting pretty good out of bunkers with the 58).
  6. Ok,

Thanks for all the help, I dont use a 3 iron because i have a 19* hybrid and 2 degree stronger 4 iron and 1 degree stronger 5 iron which is perfect for me.

The TM wedges have been great for me and that is why i am keeping them in the bag, they  have fresh grooves so did not want to spend to much on new wedges yet.

    Thanks

    Christian

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Bottom line. Like I said in my previous reply, I think you have the gaps and bounces established (and this is to be kept in mind when you upgrade). All you have to do is continue to explore the capabilities of your wedges (and irons).

Your gaps should be 10 yards. the 15 yard gaps you have are to big. This is due to the loft of your clubs. 4* difference in loft = 10 yard gaps.

15 yard gap isn't that hard to overcome (you can split the distance by choking down 1/2" - we're only talking an error of maybe 7.5 feet).   That is the gap between my 8-9 (5*) and between the 9 and 51 (6*).  I also have a 15 yard gap between the 5H and 7H.

In my DIY iron set, it had only a PW (47) and SW (55) so I got rather adept at working the distance on the  PW.
