Hey guys, Got my new 712 cm/mb set in late December. I brought them to my local club builder a few days ago to check my lie angles and ever iron from 4-pw was set at 61 degrees and had to be adjusted. Just wondering why that is. They were supposed to be standard loft and lie and wasnt happy about shelling out around 70 bucks to get them fixed. Thanks

Just give Titleist a call right away, I'm pretty sure they can sort this one out right away.

One thing I am thinking is different measuring standards by two independent companies. Titleist could have a different measuring device than your local club builder. Just like between different club manufacturers, each brand has their own method of measurement.

Another would be that the clubs have changed their lies through regular use (although you've just had them few months ago). That's why they tell us to have our clubs checked once in awhile if their loft and lie angles have changed over time, most especially with forged irons.

How are you liking them? I am also of thinking of getting a mixed set of CB/MB? What shaft did you get?

As your club builder will tell you, loft and lie machines can and do sometimes differ up to 1 and even 2°.  If you ever feel that your lie angles are off, please contact us before you have anything done to them. We would like the opportunity to bring them in, measure them and fix them if they are not correct.  We can send a call tag, and put a priority rush on it so that you are not without your clubs for more than 5-6 days.

That's correct because Ping told me their lie angle machines differ by about 1.5-2* from the Mitchell machines used in most repair facilities. I had a yellow dot 9 iron measured on three different machines in San Diego County and they all measured 67*. The spec for a yellow dot 9 iron is 65.5* (1.5 upright). A DCI 981 iron measured 64.5 on the same machine. Visually if you laid them next to each other, the Eye 2 was 1/2 of a butt-end width more upright (about 1*). One of the prime reasons most pro shops send Pings back to the factory (beside not wanting to take the risk of damaging the club when bending).

Please tell me that the person who sold you the irons wasn't the same person that charged you to adjust the lie angles.

I have a loft/lie machine. I use the same Mitchell machine that they use at TPI. I've checked and adjusted a lot of Titlest and vokey irons--old ones, new ones, irons with big gouges in the sole from hitting off rocks (rule 13-1), and I've never found one out of spec. Without knowing your clubbuilder, I would suspect his machine or the ability to use the machine as my first guess. Second guess would be counterfeits. Where did you buy your irons? If you bought them from a well known retailer, then go back to guess number 1. --Jerry

Thanks Cathi. I honestly couldnt tell at first I thought it was my swing and was catching all of my contact on the toe. He took a look and saw every club was at 61 degrees 4-pw. He made the adjustment so I dont mind but the pw was 3.5 degrees off from what the specs say. I appericate the response and all your help. Next time I will contact you first. Thanks again
  9. Yes, loft and lie machines can differ. Even if you have 2 of the same machines next to each other, they could still vary in *'s/#'s.

Cathi, the tolerance in machining could not possibly account for all lie angles being the same. If your machine says they are .5* increments, my machine will say they are .5* increments.......yours may say the 5i is 62* and mine says the 5i is 62.5*

In general, yes, the increments should be very similar.  Bending is also subjective - a slight difference in the way the head is clamped, the visual, etc.  We have a mitchell at home and always check and so far everything has been right on...

It was actually $6 for each club I had some length added to my wedges some adjustments as well so I was off on the price. Im not sure which machine he was using but I was right next to him while he did it so I can vouge for what he told me.  He did not sell me the clubs I got them through my Titleist rep. I have the project x 6.5 shafts in them and I couldnt be more happy with them after the adjust was made. No more toe shots and clean contact with a great ball flight and distance control.

Cathi is very diplomatic and professional with her answer and sending the irons to Titleist is the best procedure since you have the latest model irons. From my experience, your irons being delivered with every one at the same lie angle is impossible. Each iron head is initially made with the stock lie angle. I would have to question that clubmaker's integrity in two ways. First, telling you incorrect specs. Secondly, charging you ten dollars per club to bend irons that I'm 99.9% sure were right on. That's outrageous! To amend my earlier sentence, I HAVE seen counterfeit iron sets with specs like that. All other specs were way off as well.

Michael you should've sent them back, and BTW your local club builder is a rip off at $10 each to set lie angle........he may even be a cheat considering those prices.

Lie angle adjustments are $5 per club at all the places I go to (Golf Galaxy, Fairway Golf, Golfsmith, Golf Mart) and there is even a package deal of $30 for a set at one or two.
