I have Project X 5.5 shafts in my AP2's (love'em) and am considering new wedges. I play the 2nd generation spin mill wedges (50*, 55* & 60*) with stock shafts off the rack. Would you recommend sticking with stock shafts for the wedges or continuing the set with the Project X 5.5? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The stock shafts are S200. If they feel good as is, leave them alone.

Have a similar set up, play mp-68's with project x 5.5 and used to play vokeys with the standard shaft (s200). It worked fine although one always felt the difference when moving between the wedges and the irons. Just bought new vokey sm4's with project x 5.5. So far it feels great, also did some testing last year. Think it is a winner.

I had a problem with the distance in my wedges. I play a 5.0 px in my AP 2's and love them, so I had the PX 5.0 installed in my vokey wedges, 52, 56, and 60 degree spin mill.  But I noticed I would always come up short on my approach shots. I hit my 56 100 yards, 52 110 yards and 60 80 yards. I decided to switch back to a old set of gc14's that I still had just to see if it was the shaft. I've played a couple of rounds and I seem to be able to get the right distance with the 14's. I will continue to play these until I make up my mind on getting the new sm4's. All this to say if you hit a lot of full shots with your wedges the heavier shaft seems to make a difference, to me!

Mathematically, the diff between a wedge flex DG and a Project X 5.0 would be .7 swingweight points (130g vs 115 20g = 1 swingweight point). The gap wedges (50 and 52) on the CG14s are 1 swingweight point lighter vs Vokey. Don't know whether or not a Project X shaft has a thinner butt end vs a DG but I know that a TT Lite XL does. I constructed two 5 irons and found the TT Lite XL was 2 swingweight points heavier. My Eye 2 irons have TT Lite XL regular taper shafts and my Vokeys have stock shafts. I get more feedback on the irons and the wedges have a softer feel.

Thanks for the advice. Luckily the Titleist fitting van is coming to visit 3/8 and I'll compare the different shafts then. I know Vokey puts a ton of research into the shafts and the wedge flex s200's are probably the best choice for 90% of the players out there. Since I do tend to hit a lot of 3/4 shots with my wedges they might be the best for me. I'll find out in a few weeks. Since the project X actually goes higher and further for me in my AP2's I was hoping to get the same results with the wedges.

Smokey Yunick (the infamous engine builder) said, in a book "How to Hot Rod Small Block Chevys", that "happiness is a stock cam". I guess the equivalent could be applied to stock shafts.

    Hi BU Lefty,

Can you tell us how your testing did go ? - I live in the Netherlands and have same doubt should i schange to project X for my wedges only i don't have luxury of getting the van to visit ;-)

Thanks for sharing your experience and decision.

    Cheers,

    Hi there,

I recently switched to px also in my wedges, now play px 5.5 both in wedges(vokey's)  and irons (mp-68). I have only positive things to say, perfect distance control an feel. I think it is great to have the same feel through out the irons and wedges. If you like px in your irons, you won't be disappointed putting them in your wedges as well./Mikael

Just got my wedges back, now fitted with project-X 5.5 by @nijenhuisgolf and wow should have done this earlier.

Really nice ball flight , bounce and stop on all wedges 52,56,60.

    Thanks for the tips.

    Cheers,

    Frans - NL
