I live in the Coachella Valley---the western home of golf.  During the winter we have at least two golf expos as many snowbirds are in the region.  Titleist does not participate.  At a recent golf expo at the SilverRock Resort, I tried some MP53 Irons and i20 Woods and really liked them.  Could not try out the new Titleist clubs.  So I made the switch and trade in my Vockey Wedges, AP 2 irons and Titleist Woods.  Sorry, Titleist but you seem to be catering to the pros and not the average Joe.  Not a complete loss--I will still play Pro V1x golf ball.

I have a bit of a mixed bag with Burner driver and woods, Sumo SQ hybrids, Eye 2 Blue Dot irons, Vokey wedges and another putter. I play with what WORKS and I have had faith in Vokey wedges since 2006. Tried others briefly but went back. I also had a 975D driver and 975F fairway woods, 983K driver and 980F fairway woods (they hit pretty straight and the distance was OK but not fantastic). I tried other woods also (good distance but lie angle a bit flat so I tended to fade). I also tried G10s (4 wood and 4-6 hybrids) and my Burner 7 wood smoked the G10 4W and my SQs are much easier to hit than the G10s. I had a set of DCI 981 irons and they got good distance but were nowhere as easy to hit as my Eye 2s (the Eye 2s are very workable and they do have pretty narrow soles for a so-called set of "game improvement" irons). As far as the woods and hybrids, they fit my swing and I knock the snot out of them dead straight. I've seen Titleist at some demo days but hadn't gotten around to them. It's true that others cater to the average golfer but my two cents it that someone shouldn't be dropping $2000+ on a new set of sticks until he or she at least plays bogey golf. You do see quite a bit of more accomplished and long ball hitters using Titleists. There are certain things you can do with "player" irons that you can't do with "super game improvement" irons, such as get under the ball on a tight lie or shot shape (my Eye 2s are the best of both). I do have to admit that I was able to shape shots with my 975s but they were very finicky due to the small heads.

continuing on with my post.... In regards to the 980Fs, I could nail them pretty well on the fairway and they were very easy to hit but my main issue on the tee was hitting too high of a trajectory. I do have to admit that I miss my 3 wood (probably the only one I have been able to hit satisfactorily) but I sacrificed it in the name of a Vokey wedge. What I did like about the 975D was I could tee the ball very low (about 3/4") and I could hit it 250 yards.
First off you dont "get under the ball" on a tight lie. You hit down on the ball like any other iron shot. It's true that from hardpan that the club will be traveling slightly up at impact. But not because your trying to it's because of how the club reacts when it hits the hardpan. Also how did you get a 7 Wood to go further than a 4 Wood? Do you have any problems ballooning with the 7 Wood. Or is it a height problem with the lower lofted wood? And for the last sentence don't smaller heads make it easier to shape shots?

"Getting under the ball" is just a matter of terminology. It is easier to take a divot with a player iron vs some game improvement irons because of the sharper leading edge on the former. It is much easier to pick the ball off the ground is what I meant to say. The smaller head DOES allow for shot shaping. It is less forgiving (which is what I meant by "finicky"). In regards to the contest between the 7 wood and the 4 wood..... The 7 wood is a 2007 Burner that I just so happen to hit very well (more like "swing away.") The 4 wood was a Ping G10 I tried out. They both had a decent trajectory and I don't have any problems with ballooning shots.

Don't want to get wrapped around the axle on technicalities. The case in point I had in regards to "player" irons vs "game improvement" was in 2006. I bought a set of Adams GT3 (with the intention of upgrading) - had a hard time with hard pan lies (they had rounded soles). I found it easier to hit off a hardpan lie with my good ole Wilson X31s (1967 vintage). I immediately sold the GT3s and played with a set of Golfsmith P2 irons that I used for 3 years (these were cavity back player irons). I also constructed a set of Snake Eyes Q3I irons in 2009; although they were "game improvement", because of the sharp leading edges, I could hit off tight lies (I could hit my sand wedge off a dirt lie and still blast out of a soft bunker).

As many people have inquired and you have noticed, we do not participate in the "demo" days because we found that we were having difficulty spending quality time with each person that wanted to try and purchase Titleist clubs.  What we do is schedule "Fitting Days" with courses and bring the equipment to a setting that will allow us to spend "one on one" time with a player.  We have been conducting fitting days throughout the Palm Springs area and are planning at being at Desert Willow on Feb 24th, and at The Classic Club March 9th.  You can locate these events at:  http://www.titleist.com/find-a-golf-shop/#events.  These fitting events are free and open to the public, although we ask that you make an appointment so that we can spend 20-30 minutes with you to go over what you are looking for and what heads and shafts might work best for you.  If you wanted an in-depth fitting, Paul Bucy at Desert Willow is our Advanced Fitter in the desert and has a good selection of shafts and he does have all the heads.

Lucky Mark - he must be right-handed.  When I've tried going to these demo days, I only get to stand around and watch.  They almost never have left-handed sets to try.  When I finally found a Miz demo, the JP800 demo was damaged, so I tried the MP53.  Since they also don't make the JP800 Pro or HD in left-handed sets, what I got from my 6 minutes of fame was I could strike the ball without using a maximum game improvement set.  Being the only person at the demo with another 30 minutes scheduled, I was a little put off when the demo guy was finished at that point.  Really thought I should go with the JP800.

Fortunately, the Wisconsin top Titleist fitter is close to me.  He spent over an hour working on my irons, hybrids, and fairways.  We agreed there was not enough value in replacing my hybrid, both the G20 and AP1 were an improvement over my G10 irons (wrong length/wrong lie), and I had the wrong fairway.  The 712 AP1 worked close to the G20s but felt better, so I went with the AP1s.

So, I can't imagine buying clubs from a demo, let alone a complete set.  I can't say I ever heard, for example, another rep say I should go try the Adams driver, as well.

To another question on this chain, I spent 2 years moving from 130 to bogey, so all this hardware was my holiday present/reward, not to try to fix my game.

As far as fit, my irons are 1* upright (Eye Blue Dot), my GW and SW are .5* upright, LW and XW are 1* upright. Driver is 45", 5W is 42", 7W is 41.5" and hybrids are standard. Putter is 35" and 2* upright. I had an odd thing happen between 2003-2006: I gained an inch in height at age 47 (I've been 5'11 3/4" since high school and a 2005 insurance physical had my height at 6'1"). I found out in 2006 (when I took up golf again) that the standard golf setup doesn't work. I also decided to learn how to hit a driver (I had been using a 3 wood off the tee since 1972). My current setup is driver-5W-7W, 5H-7H, 8-9 irons, and Vokey wedges (50-08, 54-11, 58-04, 62-07). I occasionally carry the 6 and 7 irons on the regulation courses (never use them on exec courses because I found I fare better with hybrids on the 135-165 yard par 3s). My winning combo for the fairway long game since 2006 has been a 7 wood and 5H/lofted wood. I've always had some form of approach hybrid (34-35* loft) in my bag since 2007; they come in handy for the rough and fairway bunkers or when you have to carry 140 yards and drop the ball on the spot.
Mike: are there plans to come to MCAS Miramar or Admiral Baker Golf Course this year? I may be interested in taking a swipe at the 27 deg hybrid version of the 910H. In regards to longevity on Titleist gear, my dad has had an Acushnet Bullseye putter since the early 1950s and still uses it today (I was born in 1957). He is still a single digit at age 78. Another question (may be deviating from this thread).... I have a Spin-Milled c-c 58-04 and sort of get the impression it behaves more like an old school sand wedge (i.e. Sure Out) - if you look on the leading edge, it has quite a bit of bounce. What sort of grind does this wedge have? I can hit it out of soft sand and hard sand equally well. Also works well on tight and soft lies.
