When Titleist lists putter shaft lengths, is that from the top of the grip to the ground or some other spot on the putter head? I ask because I am contemplating replacing my close to 20 year old putter with a Newport. I'm 6'5" tall, and my current putter (png Nickel Anser) is about 36" to the ground. I tried gripping down on my png, but it doesn't feel right. Given that I average less than 2 putts per hole, I like to think my current length is what I want.

It looks like 34" is standard length for the Studio Select putters. My irons are 1" over standard, should a putter follow suit? Is it possible to get a Newport putter 36" long? The site doesn't list it as an option.

    Dave,

Scotty measures his putter lengths from the top of the grip down to the bottom of the "sweet spot".  So, essentially, he is going from the top of the grip, down the putter shaft, through the center of the face to the sole of the putter.

I'm 6'1" myself and I putted with a standard 34" putter up until recently and the issue I had was pulling short putts. I recently picked up a 36" White Hot 7H used for $69. I had it fitted and the final result was 35" and 2* upright. It turns out that whoever had it before had a 2" shaft extension. The bottom line is I have been saving 2-3 strokes per 9 holes on putting due to proper fit and the problem with pulled putts is gone. If you feel comfortable with a 36" putter, stick with it (especially if you have one that gives you less than 2 putts per hole). My dad has an Acushnet Bullseye brass putter since before I was born (I was born in 1957). If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Everyone should have a "Billy Baroo" in their golf bag.

Honestly, I've the same conversation with myself about whether to change up my putter at all. It comes down to I've changed out every other club in my bag this year, and it worked out really well (shaved 7 strokes off the handicap). Would the putter change help more? I tried the Scotty Cameron Newport, and it felt REALLY good. I drained 10 12-footers in a row even though I felt hunched over with a 34" stick. It doesn't look like Titleist offers putter fitting, so I guess I will keep experimenting.

  5. Dave, I use a 35.75 inch Cameron putter...there are a variety of grips you can order from Titleist and some at no additional cost.  Another option is to order a putter from your titleist retailer and have them drop ship it to the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop (w http://www.scottycameron.com/customization/modifications.asp?mp=1&st=customization ) and reference your order number from the custom shop on your titleist order.  It will save you some time and effort in the process if you want some customizing done that is not offered by Titleist such as grips, lengths, lies, shafts, shaftbands, covers, etc...

    Hope this helps!

Strange why Scotty Cameron doesn't do the same deal as Vokey - allow you to custom order vs. modifying a stock putter. Given how personal and important putters can be, you would think that would be the case.

I think what I will end up doing is taking advantage of some of the Ping fitting putters I've seen around to settle on a length and lie. Then, if I decide to go with the Newport, I will get it customized. However, it still feels like an extra step that seems strange given how Titleist is so into custom fitting for all their other club products.

  7. As you mention, You can customize it like Vokey, however there is one more step since you can not order directly from Scotty.   IMO, Actually you are able to get a deeper range of more customized services from Scotty's Custom Shop believe it or not than Vokey.   I will agree it seems strange given the level of customization that Titleist brings to the table but it is worth it!

Sometimes you can talk your rep into ordering you a putter directly to Scotty's Custom shop.  It'll save you shipping one way.  If you get heavier or lighter weights just make sure you pick up a weight tool so that you can switch them out if you decide to switch up.  The CS will have the weights shipped back.  I think the 35/340, 34/350, and 33/360 is just what makes the putter it's "ideal swing weight"  some people might want it heavier or lighter which is why the have the weight tool.  If the 34 feels too small find a 35 to demo.  You probably won't notice the lighter head weights because of the length difference.

You might also want to wait till his new line drops.  There's some sweet rumors flying around...
