    Hey everyone,

Im a teen golfer with a handicap around 7, and starting to loose it with my irons.  I will hit really solid with my 5,6,7,8, and 9, but am starting to push my shots to the right side of the hole.  I will miss green-in-reg because of a slice.  I take lessons from a pro, Lee Miller, at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club and have been working my swing which now looks like Cameron Tringale.  Can you guys possibly give me some ideas of what might be going on?

    Thanks,

    Ben

Sounds like your timing is just off. You also may be just sliding forward just a little bit instead of turning. Try the following, seems to work for me.

    • Try and hold the angle of the club for as long as you can, this will force you to release the club quicker and force you to stay behind the ball and not allow you to "slide" forward. If you watch the pro's real close in slo-mo you can see that they hold the angle until really late then fire.
    • Try to look though the ball at impact and see the ground after the ball is gone, once again it forces you to stay behind the ball.
    • Tell yourself to push the left hip back to get the downswing started then do all of the above.Good luck

Clubface open at impact. Look at the direction your divots point. Does it go straight right? If you have an inside-out swing path, the ball too far back would cause a push shot. If it goes left-right you have an outside-in swing path and the ball is too forward. Outside-in path is a result of "over the top" and that is caused by swinging too hard. If it goes straight and then slices, your swing path is OK but the clubface is open at impact. What is more likely is rotating the hands too much on the backswing or the clubface being pointed right at the top of the swing. It would take a book to list everything. The upper body getting ahead of the lower causes a lot of it, including the right foot coming up late, a flat-footed finish with the front foot. Standing too close to the ball causes a slice also and it borders on a shank. Standing too upright is another cause - the toe of the club hits ball and it goes more straight right.

    Ben,

How long have you have you had your irons?  I would ask your Teaching Professional for a club fitting.  That way he can check the flex and loft/lies which may need to be adjusted.
