i think to get it to mid size you have to put 4 layers on

If you were to take a std. 58 round grip and add 2 extra wraps (3 total), you would achieve a midsize grip.  +4 wraps(5 total) would be an oversize grip.  They make a lot of midsize and oversize grips grips these days that make the re-gripping much easier.
