    Good evening,

I need some advice before I make a few purchases.

I am changing to a 50, 56 and 60 degree wedge selection.  I am a 9 HCP and previously played with a 48 and 56.10.  My pro suggested 50.08, 56.14, and 60.10  I think I want to change the middle wedge for a bent 55 (my gaps would then be 4*, 5* and 5*).  My two questions are:

    1.  Is it better to bend weak (56 to 55) or strong (54 to 55)?

Like I said, some of my best golf has been produced by a 56.10 and I am confused as to what bounce I should go with and what is the best way to bend.  My resulting options I think would be 55.09, 55.12 (from bending 54*) or 55.07, 55.10 (weak 56*).

    2.  I am skeptical about 60.10, but nervous about chunking 60.04.

I want a 60 to be able to open the face and have options when I am short sided on fast greens but am nervous about chunking/digging 20yd pitches with only 4* of bounce.

I am neither a sweeper nor a digger....pretty average divots on full swings.

Am I on the right path and does anyone have some advice!??

    Thank you for your help.

    Joe -

I did the exact same thing with my Vokey SM wedges.  When adjusting the lofts always consider the effect on the bounce and the turf conditions you mainly play on (tighter faiwray less bounce).  My set makeup is 50.08, 55.10 (bent from 56) and 60.07.  I am neither a sweeper nor digger either and have found the seven degrees of bounce on my lob wedge is perfect on all turf and sand for me.  As long as there are no gaps in distance, I don't know if it makes a difference when bending from stronger or weaker lofts (other than bounce), just mainly what you are more comfortable with.

    Hope this helps!

The last time I had a 60 in my bag I was way too young....like ages 14-17 and was not as good of a player as I am now.  I am tainted from that experience where I always chunked my 60.  As I stated before, I want to be able to open the face for fast greens when I short side myself.

Can you open the face significantly and still play from tight lies with a 60.07?

And how easy do people with 60.04 take divots/chunk shorter pitches?  I play on average firmness public courses....except when it is wet I dont think I will pull the LW.

    Thanks.

It would be easier to open the face and play from tight lies with the 60.07 over the 60.10, but not as easily as with a 60.04. However, the 60.04 required a more precise strike to be used effectively. The extra bounce on the 60.07 or 60.10 makes it a bit more forgiving on fat shots, so I think those would be good choices for you. I'm a scratch player, and I carry 48.06, 54.11, and 60.04. My strength is in my wedge game, especially in the half-wedge shots, from 40-80 yards. I'm a sweeper, so I have lower bounce on my wedges. The 60.04 give me more versatility around the greens, but I lose some forgiveness. I'm not a big fan of high bounce wedges (I like to open the face a lot), so I would recommend the 60.07 for you.

I know that you're probably looking for answers, but...

Hopefully, you're considering Vokey wedges. There are so many different loft/lie/bounce/grind combos available. My suggestion would be to find your closest authorized Titleist rep and go try out some different wedges. They'll be able to dial in the absolute best wedge/bounce for your game.

    Hi guys,

Here is some great advice from Master Craftsman Bob Vokey on bounce and wedge set up from the recent Q&A we did with him on Team Titleist.

    Another member asked...

"I hear all the time that players do not have enough bounce on their wedges. I am a scratch player from Texas, play on mostly firm courses and have always preferred SW and LW's with low bounce. Am I missing scoring opportunities playing low bounce wedges?"

And this is what "The Voke" had to say...

Strengthing your 56.14 will basicly give you a 55.13 which is still more bounce that you've been playing with.  --Jerry

Remember that when changing the loft that the bounce will change in the same manor that the loft changes. So if you decrease loft by a degree the resulting change in bounce will be a degree less and if you strengthen the loft by a degree the resulting change in bounce will be a degree more. I hope this helps.

Forgot about this post  but would like to update.  After a fitting session in NY, we decided to go with a 50.08, 55.10 (56.11 bent) and 60.04.  My first round with the new wedges, had a sandie with the 60 after short-siding myself, and hit many good shots with the 50 and 55.  I think for me, switching to a 3-wedge set was one of the best decisions I have made in my golf career.  I now have 4 wedges (including PW) that I know my distance for.  This helps my game drastically and I find myself making smarter decisions, laying up to comfortable yardages that I am confident I have the shot for.  Time to go low in 2011!
