Shaft Build Differences?

  1. Specialist places like Cool Clubs claim they build clubs to exact specification that's determined at their fittings. Before I head to TPI, do Titleist build clubs to the exact specs that are given at the fitting? E.g. a Dynamic Gold stiff shaft you hit at the fitting might be stiffer than a Dynamic Gold stiff shaft you actually receive in the one that's built and sent to you.

I've heard from people where they've been fitted and determined particular shaft, loft, lie specs but received something very different.

  2. I think we can all agree that the purpose of getting fitted, regardless of where, is to determine your optimal specifications and to have the clubs built accordingly. I have had various Titleist fittings at both my private course and at Titleist Thursday events. In all cases my clubs were built to my precise specifications (that includes swing weight, shaft length, __ degrees upright/flat, __ degrees weak/strong). I know that the builds were precise from Titleist because I would have my local club builder, or in some cases my pro shop, get the tools out to measure each and every club. I have yet to find a single club that was off even a fraction. While I cannot speak for other fitting venues, I can vouch for the quality control of custom clubs coming directly from Titleist.

Titleist has a video on how they build custom clubs - many at no up-charge. You can see from here - www.titleist.com/golf-clubs - it was impressive when I had a chance to tour the plant.
Cool Clubs or other major builders may in fact test each individual component and pure the shafts, but not at no up-charge. If you can afford it and you feel it is value added, then go for it. Personally, if I was going to spend up to $400+ for an iron, I'd rather look at Cncpt or PXG rather than that much extra money for a T-series iron. But the market exists for a reason.
  4. You will receive what you were fit for. The level of tolerances allowed are very tight. I witnessed the process at the Titleist facility, for example the industry will allow for a range of tolerance of 1* when it comes to loft and lie angle, Titleist caps it at 1/2 a degree and watching them in action they were consistently within 1/100th of a degree. Shafts are also pre-sorted for weight and flex. Whenever there is a "backorder" it is usually because what they received did not pass their inspection, they have a rigorous quality control, even the grips get sorted by weight.
  5. Thanks guys, helpful to get some personal testimony and glad that Titleist are careful with what they actually send out (friends who have had negative experiences with OEM build bought from other companies)
