Graphite shaft recommended for AP2 irons

  1. I have a 0 handicap and play AP2 710 irons with Nippon Steel 105 shafts.  Was interested in shifting to graphite shafts to pick up a few MPH in club head speed and higher launch.  I am 64 years old and hit a 6 iron about 160 yards.  I went and hit the 712 irons using the GDI 65i shafts and certainly picked up ball speed and yardage and hit it higher but concerned I might lose control.  Any recommendations on a different graphite shaft for me?

  2. Robert,

I've had customers tell me that the VS Proto-T 85 works well with the 712 AP2's. I've fit a guy in to AP2's with the Titleist Tour Ad 65i and his results were amazing. Try to find an advance fitter near you. If there aren't any, an authorized Titleist fitter will do fine. If the shaft you're interested in isn't available through them, they may be able to order a demo shaft for you to try. Anyways, I hope you find the right combo. Let us know how things go.

  3. Thanks for the feedback David.  I was very surprised when I hit the AP2 irons with the Tour AD 65i graphite shafts.  Definitely picked up several MPH of club head speed and the launch angle was high.  Seemed to control the ball just fine as well.  I've asked my club fitter to see if the VS Proto-T 75 & 85 shafts can be made available from Titleist to hit.  If not I might just go with the 65i shafts.  Also, a rep from Hot Stix said that the performance of the 65i shafts was not that different than the VS Proto-T shafts in their experience and recommended I go with the 65i shafts given my rhythmic swing.
