  1. Please could anybody help me on this guestion of shaft lenth,i'm 5ft 6ins my irons shafts are 1/2" shorter which feels better for me i've read an on mygolfspy a test they carried out on shorting the driver shafts on 5 random people, The results were on average 1.5m less in distance but 23% more accuracy, My problem is asking a number of golf shops general oppinion is not to shorten club as would'nt hit far & its an expensive mistake if sharft did'nt perform better as standard length !! So just trying to find anyone who has shortened there shaft & how you've found the club after thanks for any reploys.

    Kevin,

The best way to determine the proper length of your driver, is to have a Club Fitter put face tape on the club and have you hit balls.  This will determine the most consistent length that will prouce the fastest ball speeds.  You can keep in mind that the second most used driver length on tour is 44.5" (-1/2" short from standard).  Also, keep in mind that this is used by players of all different heights.

If you shorten the shaft and keep the stock grip, you lose 3 swingweight points for 1/2" of shortening and slightly less than 6 swingweight points for 1". Not too many people think about putting anything other than the standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet or Lamkin Crossline grip - they kill the swingweight if you play with shorter than standard clubs and more so if your hand size necessitates a midsize or oversize grip (generally 61-63 for midsize and ~70 for oversize). Changing the stock rubber grip to Winn Excel RF restores 2 swingweight points on a standard grip (42g vs 52g). If you use a midsize rubber grip, going to a Winn Excel RF midsize will restore by 4 swingweight points. A Winn Lite or Lite Dri-Tac is a 25 gram grip and this would be needed if someone used a 44" driver. My driver is 45". My 5 wood is 42" and my 7 wood is 41.5" Also, my irons are Eye 2 Blue Dot -1/4" (9 iron is 35.5" and 5 iron is 37.5"). I have Winn Excel RF midsize grips on all my clubs except my Vokey wedges (I left them bone stock, except to set the 50 and 54 to 1/2* upright and the 58 and 62 to 1* upright).
