I have a 910D2 9.5 degree with Aldila RIP 60 45" shaft. I had a 44.5" shaft in my last driver which felt much better and i could control it more and i actually could make a better swing with it. If i were to cut my Aldila RIP down to 44.5", what would be the effects to the shafts performance, both positive and negative?

Thanks, Please Help Me, Ben Steele

  2. Hi Ben,Normally when a shaft is installed at 44.5 inches length it has the same tip trim in the driver as for 45 inch. The difference is an extra 1/2 inch is cut off the butt. ( unless of course in your old driver you specified extra tip trim ( at the hosel end of the shaft)

Butt triming will not significantly change the way the shaft plays but it will reduce the swingweight of the club around 3 swingweight points. This would mean that you may well find the club feels too light . To fix this you need to change the weight in the weight in the sole of the driver from the current one ( Check if the current weight has a red dot which = 7 grams) You can purchase the weight kit and install the 12 gram weight which will bring the club back to almost the current swing weight. ( 2 grams + 1 swingweight point)

If you are playing a heavier weight than the 7 already you most likely need to return the club if after butt trimming the shaft it feels too light. ( 12 gram is the heaviest weight you can get from the kit).

Hope this helps Regards, Chris T.

Changing the grip also changes swingweight. The standard rubber grip is 52 g. A Winn Excel RF grip is 42g and will increase the swingweight by 2 points. A Winn Lite is 25 g and will increase the swing weight 5 points. Even bigger changes are noticed between a midsize rubber grip (typically 63g) - that is 4 swingweight points lower swingweight vs an Excel RF midsize (43g) No one thinks about the grip in the swingweight equation.
