Putter length??? Putter fitting...

I had lessons with my instructor yesterday. We concentrated on putting. We worked on gripping down on the putter and having my eyes over the ball during setup. I usually have my eyes below the ball (viewing from top), gripping almost on the butt end and having the toe of the putter pointing up. Of course we also worked on stroke rhythm. So basically, judging from my old setup my putter is long for me (35"). My instructor is suggesting cutting it down to 33" or just gripping way down. Although the new techniques feel good, I ended up making 38 putts today (usually I average 30-32). Now I am having mixed feelings on this new putting style even if it is the proper way...

I would like to get feedback on putter fitting? Has anyone gone through with it? What about cutting the length, will it affect balance and performance, etc??? Thanks for the help.

  2. Carlo, putter fitting is a very personal experience in my opinion...however it sounds like your instructor has given you some key thoughts that are important as part of your putting stroke.  I would experiment more so than getting a fitting...IMHO putter fitting is more trail and error than anything...putters also are affected by face balance or toe flow so you have a lot to experiment with...have fun with it!

Thanks Chris. Fortunately I have all winter to think about it and  experiment on it.

A proper putter fitting is as important, if not more important, than any other club in your bag.  The length, loft and lie all need to be checked and matched to your stroke.  For example, I keep my hands close to my body while putting, but a standard lie has the toe pointed way up in the air.  So, I have the lie bent to about 3 degrees flat.  If you have a forward press, you may need to adjust the loft accordingly.   There's also the stroke that you are taking too.  Some putters are better for certain strokes.   I would go let a PGA professional take a look at your stroke and make some recommendations.

Thanks also memp. I guess its about time to get my putter fitted. It was my dad's and the last thing he gave me, I just didn't want to mess with it. But at some point you just have to make changes for the better.

Maybe you should keep your dad's putter in it's current shape to remember him.  Go buy yourself a Scotty Cameron that fits your stroke.

That would be a good suggestion... however, I am saving up on a new set of irons. I'm just sentimental, its feeld great using my dad's putter...

I used my Dad's irons (Wilson Staff X-31 that he bought in 1967) for 25 years because that was my first high quality set of irons.

    Carlo,

I would trust your Teaching Professional as far as the lesson went.  It sounds like he has you focused on all the right essentials needed for a proper setup.  I would recommend getting re-fit for your putter.  This will allow for more on-center hits and better distance control.  By cutting the length of the putter down 2", it is going to feel much lighter.  You may need to look into adding weight to the head to compensate for the length change.  Looks like you may be near an one of our Advanced Fitting Centers that has a Putter Studio, Cherokee CC.   Larry Tiziani would be the person to contact there about setting up a putter fitting.  Hope this helps!

Thanks again Cameron for the info. I will look into that 'club fitting' at Cherokee CC. Most especially when the 712 comes out, I am willing to drive 2 hours for that!

    Joseph,

There is a Golf shop in Mineola, NY called Pets S Golf Shop.  They have a SAM putt lab that they use for Their putter fittings.  They are one of our Advanced Fitting Centers and would be a great place for you to head for a putter fitting.

Putter fitting is extremely important. I had been using a standard length putter (34") for all my golfing existance until about 6 months ago (when I acquired a 36" putter). My main issue had been pulling 6-10 foot putts. I took the 36" in for a fitting and 35" with 2* upright was my final setup. Putting has dramatically improved on the shorter putts and I have saved 2-3 strokes per 9 holes on putting. If anyone is in San Diego, go to Fairway Golf for your fitting needs (www.fairwaygolfusa.com) - the repair person at the Convoy store (Jesse) knows his stuff on fitting (as do his two assistants). They also helped me when I constructed a set of irons in 2009, along with recently fitting a set of DCI 981s.

35" is pretty comfortable for me. I felt a bit hunched over using a standard length putter.

Hi Cameron, Would Novogolf in Tappan NY be one of Titleist's Advanced Fitting Centers?

    Joseph,

They are not considered one of our Advanced Fitting Centers, but are one of our local fitting centers equipped with fitting equipment and a certified Titleist Fitter.

Cameron, Noticed the thread, and not to jump on the bandwagon here, but I'm in League City, TX and I'm due for a Scotty. Any advanced fitting centers near? Please don't say Golfsmith. Thanks

It is very cool that you are seeking to get fitted for your putter. That is, IMO, the most important club in th bag. I was fitted a few years back and ended up with the set up that I was using for years 35/330g. I know Scotty offers many choices, specially with the Select and California lines, so you should be able to find something nice and suitable for your game. Good luck!

Joseph. Head over to Sleepy Hollow in Scarborough NY and see Kevin. Nothing wrong with Pete's Golf but I drove and extra hour past Pete's to get to Sleepy Hollow and would do it again. It's worth the trip.

Hey Joseph. Yes I am referring to the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.  They are a Titleist regional fitting center and opened to the general public.  Great place.

Could you write a bit about your experience at Sleepy Hollow? What did you have done and what did you walk away with? Thanks in advance.

I think you got plenty of feed back on putter fittings. I think one thing you need to remember is when your taking lessons and they are changing your swing weather its your putter or your driver these things take time. Look at T.W. he has been going threw a change the last two years. Now i don't think it will take you two years cause he was also plaged with injuries and other issues but the point of the story is i would stay with your instructors lesson. Yea your puts will go up for alittle bit but as that stroke becomes more of your own that number will drop fast. Stick with it I'm very sure it will work out in the end.

as far as your putter.  I know i am going to get blasted by the scotty cammeron religious followers but cut it down and slap 20 grams of led tape on the bottom. Its not the end of the world if you do that. and if your worried about it that much just keep choking down.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate them, since putting will be the one aspect in my game that I can practice most during the winter. All the advice will be considered. Happy golfing to those who can still come out and play.
