Back to a 3-iron? or maybe a 2½-iron!

I have a set of 710 AP2's that I got in Feb. 2010 and have loved them from Day-1. Hcp index has dropped to a low of 1.2 this season, a good 2-4 shots better than I've seen since I was half my age - I'm 48 now. The set of AP2's does not include a 3-iron, but a 4-iron 1 degree strong (standard is 24* according to Titleist.com) and I've been hitting it more and more lately on long par-3's up to 200 yards. I just feel so confident hitting it off the tee! I have two 909H hybrids (17* and 21*) and I'm starting to think I'd like to pull the 21* at times for a 3-iron, depending on course and course conditions. The standard loft is 21* (and my 4-iron is 23*) so my question is this: Can I get a 3-iron 2 degrees strong? PS: The whole set of irons is 2* flat. Thanks!

Now I'm all kinds of confused, used to be the AP2's were made 1 degree stronger than any other iron, then had to be adjusted a degree or 2 stronger to bring down the spin.

Now the specs say the standard loft is the same as about all other irons.

Why the change in the standard specs?

Yes you can order one 2* strong but just remember it will decrease the bounce 2* as well but with a 3 iron that should not be an issue.

The three iron as designed does not have any bounce...if it is strengthened by one degree it actually will have negative bounce.  Curious...not an issue?  I am not debating the point just trying to understand.  I really appreciate the dialogue...it helps.  Thanks in advance for thoughts/opinions.

The reason I'm looking for the 3-iron with 2* strong is that my 4-iron is already 1* strong (my fitter suggested that to keep the gap at 4* between each iron). If I get the 3-iron with standard loft, it would only be 2* stronger than my 4-iron. I have two 909F hybrids (17* and 21*) that I'm thinking of replacing with a 19* 910F. I'd also like to have the flexibility of switching clubs around based on where I'm playing. My home course has two challenging par-3's on the front nine of 205 and 215 and I feel much more confident hitting a 4-iron than a hybrid. I can get my 4-iron to the front pin on the 205, but not the 215. I'm hoping the strong 3-iron gets me deeper on the 205 and onto the 215. I'm not a super long hitter, but at age 48, I'm playing my best ever, lowering my index as low as 1.2 this summer. I credit my AP2's for some of that! :)

I get it.  You really know your game and what you are talking about.  I agree the AP2's are easy to hit and when hit well are more accurate than a hybrid.  Not to confuse the situation but to add another option...some players like Zach Johnson and Kevin Na put a AP1 in between the AP2's and a hybrid.  Rather than tweak the loft on the AP2 you could put in a stock AP1 in...they are standard 1* stronger and may asist with the transition from a strong AP2 to a 19* hybrid.  In the end it is what you are most comfortable with.  Nice chatting...and best of luck.

Why not get it only 1* strong and see what kind of distance you can get out of it, a lot of the time people start loosing distance with their long irons if they are too strong because their launch and spin drop down below their ideal numbers. This is mainly why the long irons are only 3* different in loft.

Matthew, thanks for your expert reply. I've already ordered it at 2* strong, but if it doesn't provide the expected results, I could have it bent back a degree, couldn't I? I'll let you know how it works out.
