PGA TOUR

Carlos Ortiz (Pro V1x) earned an emotional first career PGA TOUR title with a two-shot victory at the Vivint Houston Open.

  • Ortiz fired four consecutive rounds in the 60’s, including a closing 5-under 65 en route to a 13-under par 267 victory total.
  • Three players – including Pro V1 loyalists Talor Gooch and Mackenzie Hughes – carded tournament low and new course record 7-under par 63’s on Sunday to secure Top 10 finishes.
  • Gooch finished solo 4th, while Hughes tied for 7th with Tyrrell Hatton (Pro V1x), who posted 67-65 on the weekend.
  • Ortiz earns his first invitation to the Masters next April. He was at Augusta last year, but it was to watch his brother, Alvaro, who qualified in 2019 after winning the Latin American Amateur.

THE WORLD'S BEST CONTINUE TO TRANSITION TO NEW PRO V1/PRO V1x

There were 16 NEW Pro V1 (6) and Pro V1x (10) in play at the Houston Open this week – that’s more golf balls than the nearest competitor had for its entire brand count.

  • Among those making the switch for the first time this week to the NEW Pro V1 were Jason Dufner, Tyler Duncan and Jimmy Walker, while Greg Chalmers, Chris Kirk, C.T. Pan and Adam Scott transitioned into the NEW Pro V1x.
  • Brian Gay was the first player to win with the NEW Pro V1 at the Bermuda Championship last week.
  • The NEW Pro V1 and Pro V1x will be available in golf shops around the world in early 2021.

ADAM SCOTT PLAYS NEW BALL AND DRIVER FOR FIRST TIME – TOPS FIELD IN DRIVING DISTANCE

  • Adam Scott was playing on the PGA TOUR for the first time since the U.S. Open and decided to put the NEW Pro V1x into play straight away. With the ball change, he also wanted to test the NEW TSi drivers to determine which gave him optimal performance off the tee.
  • After extensive testing, the team landed on a NEW TSi4 driver with a Ventus Red 6x shaft at 46” and a D2 SureFit setting.
  • The result: Scott led the field in Driving Distance at 326.4 yards, including the tournament’s longest single drive of 369 yards.
  • His success wasn’t limited to the tee ball, he also ranked 3rd in Putts Per Greens in Regulation (1.638) and was 5th in Birdies (19).

TITLEIST EQUIPMENT DOMINANCE

Titleist was the top equipment choice across seven major categories at the Houston Open.

  • In addition to winning with the Pro V1x, the champion also trusted his performance to a Titleist U500 3-iron and Vokey Design SM8 gap (50.12), sand (54.10S) and lob (60T) wedges.
  • The win is the sixth for Titleist golf ball players through the first nine events on the 2020-21 PGA TOUR – no other brand has more than one.
  • In addition to Titleist leading the driver count once again, the TSi3 was the most played individual model with 22.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

It took an extra day and nine extra holes, but Kevin Sutherland (Pro V1x) emerged as the winner over Paul Broadhurst (Pro V1) in an all-Titleist golf playoff at the Charles Schwab Championship.

  • Sutherland’s last three wins on PGA Tour Champions have now come in a playoff.
  • The 54-hole event ended up going 63 holes before the tournament was decided, when Sutherland, the 2017 Charles Schwab Cup Championship winner, converted a four-foot birdie putt for the win.
  • It was the fifth time the pair played No. 17 in the playoff. The duo was one hole shy of the longest playoff in Champions Tour history of 10.
  • Six holes were contested before darkness suspended play on Sunday.
  • Both players finished regulation at 15-under 198, which included a closing 8-under par by Broadhurst to rally from six shots back at the start of the final round.
  • The win gives Titleist golf ball players eight victories on the shortened 2020 season, more than all other golf balls combined.
  • Titleist topped the field in golf balls with 61 players (75%) in the field of 81, more than six times the nearest competitor (10).

SOUTH AFRICA

Ruan Korb (Pro V1) claimed his maiden Sunshine Tour victory with a one-shot win at the Time Square Casino Challenge.

  • Korb birdied the last hole to edge Anton Haig (Pro V1), closing with a 2-under 70 en route to a 15-under 201 victory total.
  • Korb is now exempt for all three upcoming European Tour co-sanctioned events in South Africa — the Joburg Open, Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open.
  • Haig closed with a 6-under 66 to finish solo 2nd, while Jake Redman (Pro V1x) secured a share of third place, another two shots back.
  • Nine of the 11 players who finished among the top 10 and ties relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.
  • Titleist was the most relied upon golf ball in the field of 120 players with 96 (80%)  - more than four times the nearest competitor with 22.

KOREA

  • In fact, Han topped a leaderboard on which all 13 players who finished among the Top 10 and ties relied upon a Pro V1 or Pro V1x for their success.
  • Titleist was the top choice in golf balls  (73/76%), drivers (40/42%), fairway metals (49/40%), iron sets (41/43%), wedges  (184/71%) and putters (45/47%), sweeping every major equipment category.
