Wedges are a feel club, and you have to be able to
"take some off it" as they say amongst players. The most important factor is understanding your swing and the bounce that works best for you. If you have good technique, you can switch from the 52/56/60 mode to 50/54/58 in a matter of days. If you have a 6 degree gap in there between PW/Gap wedge, it's not a huge deal, you learn to make it work with feel. I see guys all the time that can't play a lick giving swing/club advice, do yourself a favor, find a teacher/fitter, and establish a relationship. It'll pay off! Good Luck!
Hit send too soon but will agree that acclimating to a wedge setup is not that big of a deal. I'd say for an old geezer I play a reasonable game of golf and break 80 every now and then. I've actually played some of my best golf with a driver, 7 wood, 27H, 32 & 39 (716CB 7 iron and 716MB 8 iron) and 46-52-58-64 on wedges. In fact, between 2020-2023 I played 695MB 7-P. My current bag is pretty simple: driver-5W-9W-27H-34H and the short iron setup. Occasionally will tighten things up and carry 23-29H in place of the 27. A year ago, put a Sumo2 SQ 34H back in after not using one since 2015 (I found one on eBay with a stiff shaft).

Been going to a local "mom and pop" place called Fairway Golf in San Diego since about 2008. I had to re-learn how to play golf in 2007 after practically none after 2000. I threw my back out in 2005. Fitting is important. I'm 6'1" and I've developed a more upright swing. I play 1.5* upright on my driver, fairways and hybrids. 44" driver, 41.5 on the 5 wood, 40.5 on the 9 wood. standard length and A2 surefit on the hybrids (all weighted at D2). I play a 65* lie angle on 9 iron and PW, 65.5 on the 52 (which is a 54-14F) and 66 on the 58 and 64. The current fitter is literally a mad scientist.

lougreingolf1.wordpress.com/.../ 50 years ago what held true then still does today: most golfers can't hit a 3 iron. And, yes, I picked up a refurbished 6 wood on eBay for $53 and put it in my dad's bag in place of the 4 iron.

What I've noticed is many try to get "fancy" on pitch and chip shots and flip their hands. My blog is a combination of sarcasm and some timeless golf tips from fave pros and local teachers. JD is right about "get fit for your grip"; been using an Excel RF oversize on everything (even Vokeys) for 10 years now.

RE: Wedge Gapping
Bottom line, many golfers get too technical with basic equipment. www.youtube.com/.../BZMyhcsrduk I was evaluating a local vendor's custom wedges with my ever trusty 60-12D.

my short iron gapping is 38.5-46-52-58-64.

Like I mentioned in a number of my posts.... Not everyone plays driver-3W-5W, 3-4H, 6-P, 52-56-60.
What do you guys think? 1. What I intended to take on the course this morning. I just got the 58K* and I put in the 58-14K (56*). The goal was to evaluate the K*

2. Wedge setup as it stands now. The 48-10F and 54-12D (46 & 52* lofts) didn’t take long to get acclimated and I had some pretty deadly shots. Plus I found out while practIcing that 54-12D (52*) works much better vs 54-10S (52*) for longer sand shots. 58-14K bent to 56 is very effective out of various bunkers (soft and firm) for quite some time.

3. The 46-10F (44*) had been working in place of a 9 iron for quite some time but for bump n run shots it rolls a bit too much. Still leaving it as an option for a “tighter” iron setup. I have a 52-12F bent to 50 in this. I also have a 50-12F at stock loft

4. This is what I’ll be playing on a certain golf course because the longest par 3 is within range of my 7 from the back of the white tee. I shot 39 this morning. I don’t need to carry a 5 wood on this course.

To maintain the “required” 4* gap, set the 58-12D to stock. The 62-08M has been working out of deep green side bunkers. I was getting some good golf shots with the low bounce K. I had the 60-06K, 62-08M and 64/10 Phil at the clubhouse practice green and pitching areas. The M grind and low bounce K are just about equal but the former was picking the ball better off hard lies. The M does flop shots better. I decided to pair the low bounce K with 64. www.titleist.com/.../cnui22ikornro0kjtzup

RE: Wedge Gapping
What one sees in my thumbnail TODAY is what works nicely. 54-10S, 58-12D (57*) and 60-06K between the 50-12F and Phil 64.

I also have an SM6 60-12K (59*) and 60-14K/62-08M (58-61) and they both work.
The 58-12D just about completely dominated the 60-14K during a practice session yesterday. Got the ball out better from soft sand and got better distance on both hard and soft pitch shots. The 60-14K had been doing a better job clearing the lip of a deep bunker; the low bounce K and the SM6 do the same as the high bounce K but is a no brainer vs the SM6 out of a deep bunker with hard sand.

I’m still keeping the M grind but using it with my Dad’s Apex irons.

RE: Wedge Gapping

What one sees in my thumbnail TODAY is what works nicely. 54-10S, 58-12D (57*) and 60-06K between the 50-12F and Phil 64.

I like 4 wedges, I have a set of Titleist 150's, strong loft, so I bent the PW-44 to 45, GW-48 to 50, Like a little more bounce on my SW so I bent the 54 to 55 and left the 60 as is.
Like everything, try changes and see what works best for you.

RE: Wedge Gapping
Sticking with the 8-GW on the left. The wedge gapping is 44-49-54-58-60-64z. 7H and 8 iron are 34-39.

In reserve I have T150 8 iron, 690CB 9 iron, 48-10F (46*) and 52-12F (50*).

The 695MB hits 2 yards farther vs T150. The Vokey 46-10F (44*) gets the same distance as the 9 iron. The 52-12F gets better height because of the lower bounce vs 50–12F but the latter works better in sand and for flopping.

The K grind and T grind are go to for deep green side bunkers (depending on firmness).

RE: Wedge Gapping

Sticking with the 8-GW on the left. I’m using a Vokey 46-10F at 44* in place of a 9 iron. Wedge gap is 50-56-60-64 with a 60-14K (58*) as needed.

I hit my 695MB 8 iron 2 yards farther than a T150 8 iron. I can go “traditional” by pulling the 695MB 8 iron, Vokey 46-10F and 52-12F (39-44-50) and replace them with T150, 690CB 9 iron, 48-10F and 54-10S (36-42-48-52) but… why bother?
