I agree with AntD. I believe that the key word here is “face”. Putting some tape on the crown of a driver before a round is OK (same as Bubba’s paint job on his driver) but putting some tape on the face is definitely not.

As far as I remember, the Lyle/Faldo incident centred on Sandy putting a sticking plaster on the top of the putter to reduce glare during the round, hence altering its playing characteristics.

The point I was trying to make was that covering the crown on the driver in a clear plastic film would be no different to stamping a wedge or colouring a Scotty... The film wouldn't be on the face of the club so wouldn't affect the performance or it conforming to the rules, unlike those using drivers with the GC2 / Quad dots on.

There was a pro recently who was DQ'd for using a driver with the dots.

Foreign Material (rule 4-2b)

Foreign material must not be applied to the club face for the purpose of influencing the movement of the ball.

It then goes on to mention various substances then the very last line states.

"Any tape or similar material added to the face is not permitted for any purposes"

I hope that clears everything up.

What has stamps on the back of wedges got to do with anything nonconforming, seriously ? Much the same as lead tape on the back of irons or putters.

I can understand everyone not having a full grasp of the rules of the game but some of these replies are quite bewildering.

From the comments above check with your committee as I don't believe anyone has defined the law and I can't see anything on the R&A site.

What about all those stamps on wedges and custom shop paint fills on Scotty's ? I know of a player at my club who still has the price label on one of his clubs ...is that club illegal?

I'll be checking other competitor bags in my next comp...LOL

Do you put lead tape on the face or on the top leading edge of your irons ?

Yeah, I remember that - they were both very young but Lyle put a plaster on the top of his putter to stop the reflected glare from the sun, which was dazzling him and affecting his putting. Faldo dobbed him in and there was a fearful falling out... The bad blood lasted for years.
Bet Lyle never played a shiny putter after that though!!

Hi Tosh

If your handicap is adjusted as a result of your score then its official any Club Matchplay matches would also be deemed as official. Best to check with your Match Committee at your home course, they will keep you right, but in the end its the players responsibility.

That would be a very questionable thing to do in my opinion. The reason for Tosh taping it up is very understandable however, he is leaving himself wide open even if he "just" tapes up the crown, why would you risk playing a possible nonconforming club.

Tosh, if those comps are qualifiers then yes. Sorry for the bad news but I believe you would be playing illegal equipment.

You run the risk of being called the worse thing anyone could ever be called in golf and it's a stigma that will never leave you.

The tape should be available from your Pro shop but as Stuart M says it would probably be non conforming for competition play, I remember a dispute betweed Faldo and Lyle about a piece of tape over the top of a putter head in the 80s.

It will then become nonconforming, which is fine if you don't wish to compete in any qualifying competitions but if you do then you are playing with illegal equipment.

Seen a few with a strip of sellotape on them, I know the demo clubs at my pro shop does the same.

You could try some of the stuff they use to protect car paintwork. I've used it on the rear sill on my car to protect against damage while loading and unloading the golf gear. if it scratches it self heals so you cant see any scratches. You could sky every drive and no one will know...LOL

If there's a car bodyshop near you that does these coatings or wraps they may have a small offcut you need.

Helicopter tape ma man, 3M make the best stuff but many brands available.

I use it to protect the mountain bike.
