TT, I'm not sure what happened to me, but man, my swing speed absolutely SUCKS!!!! In my teens and 20s I was around 105 mph, which netted me some good distance. However, I sucked at golf then, 25+ handicap. Now I'm 42, slow and overweight, but I am down to a 5.6 GHIN! My irons are dialed in, but I am only getting a max of 88-90 mph, but more of an 85 mph average. I don't want to spend $200+ on the Super Speed program. I have a shaft that I'm swinging for overspeed training, and it has netted me about 2 mph, I'm able to swing at 90mph.

What am I doing wrong?? It's so frustrating to feel like I've pured a drive and come to find out it only went 205 yards! I'm always left with 5, 6 or 7 iron into the green and no chance of reaching par 5s in 2. I'm in the off season here in Idaho, so I'll take any advice I can get from anyone who has had similar struggles.

    Thanks in advance!

Try this from Fit for Golf. You will need a club speed radar of some sort to get swing speed.

Pre test: Warm up, then hit 10 balls and get average + max speed.
3 sessions per week with 48 hours in between sessions.
    Month 1: 10 swings, 2 min break x 3 sets
    Month 2: 10 swings, 2 min break x 4 sets
    Month 3: 10 swings, 2 min break x 5 sets.

I play golf with a bunch of friends and we always have some type of money (or drinks) on the line. I also play in a few open tournaments and a few senior tournaments every year just to see how well I can compete with strict rules to comply with. I'm running with a 16 +/- GHIN and have no idea what my swing speed is. Of all the times I've played against my buddies or other competitors nobody EVER mentions swing speed, but that 5.6 GHIN sure would be pretty impressive.
You say you're slow and overweight. Start working out and include 20 minutes of cardio, followed by rigorous (but not too heavy) weights and flexibility. After 6 months you'll see an improvement, and you'll want to send me a dozen ProV1x golf balls as a thank you.
    You're welcome!!!

Clay Ballard of Top Speed Golf has several videos on how to increase driver swing speed. He actually has an online program as well. I have used his methods before & increased 5-6 mph swing speed with my driver & I was 55 at the time.

    Good Luck,

I am currently following Clay Ballard and his system. When I started my playing speed with my driver was around 108. My playing speed now is around 115 and I have confidence I can get that a little higher. My MAX effort was 117 before, and now I can get to 122. What is great is that he gives you several different feels to find the one that works best for you. I really like having my new playing speed close to my old max. Helped in the irons too.

I hate to put it this way, but welcome to the club. As we age, we lose flexibility and clubhead speed decreases. I would suggest you attend a Titleist Fitting Day. You'll be amazed at what you'll find out. I was fit into and am now using a TSi1 12 deg. Driver with an Aldila Ascent 40 gram shaft in an R2 (Senior) flex. A decrease in spin and an increase in ball speed, distance and accuracy. Now, I'm not saying it's going to turn the clock back 30 years, but I'm seeing parts of the golf course that I haven't seen in a while.

If you are able to work on your flexibility and core you will see some speed gains. The more flexibility you have the deeper you can rotate and create speed. Same premise with your core.

I use the SKILZ power angle and an alignment stick. I swing the SKILZ 5 swings as fast as I can righty and lefty then the same with the alignment stick. I do two rounds twice a week. I’ve picked up some speed that way.

The idea is to swing something light faster. The SKILZ power angle is weighted so I build with that and the alignment stick is really light.

Hey man, i know the suppressed is expensive but i can honestly tell you it works. If you dont want to spend the money, there are many ways to create your own relatively cheap. Ive seen a few DIY'rs post how they did it. Buy a couple cheap shafts, add the weights and boom you got the tools.

We do slow down as we get older, but, it usually happens after 50. Golf lessons may help, but, improving your swing speed will require some effort. Good Luck, and, enjoy the journey!

With a 5.6 handicap, sounds like you have a pretty solid game. A handicap that 95% of most amateurs would die for. Playing at that level I would not worry that much about club head speed. But if it is that important, I would see a PGA instructor. I am 75, club head speed 93 off the driver and playing at a 18 handicap of late. Has gone up from a 10 over the past year. My game has been bipolar this past year and am working with two PGA pros. They tell me 90% of it is in my head and the rest is mental. I will gladly swap games.
  11. Hey GStuart - I'm 33 and even I'm looking for more clubhead speed as well (currently 106-ish). Hell, even Bryson wants more clubhead speed! Totally understandable - but at your current speed, as you know, you are definitely leaving gains out on the course.

As others have said, your handicap is very good, but if you can bring your driver swing up to 100 mph you're probably looking at close to 250yds. That may seem like a dream to you at this point, but I think others have touched on what the potential issue may be. I myself have found that working an office job doesn't do much good for the body. With the added motivation that 100 mph swing speed could help you drop your handicap close to SCRATCH, might that be enough to help you start exercising/training for golf?

I'm currently a 2 handicap, with a 5 year plan to get to +6 and compete in the US Amateur. I think goal setting might help give you the motivation you need to get into better shape and add distance. Best of luck!

The current PGA Champion is 51. Swinging as fast as ever. Note he has a whole new training and eating routine. So how much do you want to “impress the gals with the big stick “? It won’t hurt you long term to improve your lifestyle that will improve your flexibility and core strength. If you are serious, find a qualified TPI instructor to assess your capabilities and weaknesses. They can then structure a routine of exercises. I can do my routine at home with minimal equipment.
