I'm a fitness and golf addict, generally in the gym at least 5 days a week weight lifting. With that being said, I was wondering if anyone had any golf specific workouts they would recommend? Or whether anyone could point me in the right direction

Re: Golf Specific Training / Workouts

Yoga is tough.
That's great news to hear others enthusiastic about golf-specific training. I too am a golf addict which has led to the physical fitness and pliability as big factors in the addiction.

I just wanted to add something though, 'explosive' or 'ballistic' training specifically helps in the power aspect. With strength training I think we have to be careful with flexibility and isolated strength training as they may do more harm than good for our golf. I am by no means an expert but from reading and watching myTPI articles, videos, as well as some other information from trainers like Ben Shear, Jason Glass and Jeff Fronk, too much flexibility may decrease our pliability (our muscles ability to act as rubber bands that expand and contract with speed) and too much strength training that is rep-based (such as some crossfit exercises) will actually train different aspects of our muscles and not specifically the 'fast twitch' muscles.

I recommend watching Season 6 Episode 6 of the Golf Fitness Academy. Sean Cochrane and IK Kim use 'complex' training for power. Also search for Milo Bryant powerlifting and Robert Yang Olympic lifting on the myTPI episodes of the Golf Fitness Academy. These are all great power tips based on explosive and ballistic exercises.

Re: Golf Specific Training / Workouts

Matt,

Couldn't agree more, weight lifting has certainly helped my swing, as well as my stability.

Thanks for the tips, i'll definitely throw some stretching exercises in there, and certainly want to look into yoga (contrary to the rap you get for doing it!) heard it's great for you.

Thanks,

I have been weight lifting for some time now. It has helped my game a lot. Even at times when I have been sore after a workout my consistency in my swing still improves, its unreal. When you work out with heavy weights you tend to get the bulky feeling, especially in the chest and arms, your muscles tend to get a bit tighter. I would recommend working in some stretching sessions after or in between workouts. I started doing bikram yoga (I know it sounds a bit feminine lol) and it has helped to not feel that tightness for the first few holes. I've been trying to put on some size without sacrificing my game and flexibility. Strengthen and lengthen my friend.

Re: Golf Specific Training / Workouts

TRX Suspension System, it's all body wight!

Re: Golf Specific Training / Workouts

Call Tim Tiger.
