If I have a tail wind behind me I go 5 wood since I am a longer hitter (5w 245-260 carry) unless there is a downward slope or it is a hard fairway/firm and a longer hole where distance is key. I am long with my driver but can lose it so it's not worth it on some courses/holes. Any danger past 260 I hit 3 iron since that carry is 225-240-ish plus good roll out. When the wind is at me or sideway, I go U505 3I and it stays below the tree line and some distance is made up by roll out. This is all off of the tee where I am more concerned with having plenty of weapons to get off the the best I can. So for me that is carrying the big stick when it's open, 5 wood and driving 3iron (U505).

I do not carry a 3wood and I play 5 wedges (T200 PW & 48 and Vokey 52, 56, 60)... I mention this because I do find myself at times in the 215-230 range without a comfortable choice both off the fairway/rough or tee (I am not the best at hitting the U505 off the deck unless it is purred) and the 5 wood is to much for that gap. I am considering a 4 hybrid turned down a degree to lock in 215 to 230 and swap that out for the driving 3iron on non-windy days since the 4H will go a little higher.

I want height when the conditions aid itself to it and I want lower flight w roll out in the wind. So for me I make these choices based of weather and course conditions. Similar to swapping out a high bounce SW for low to medium bounce based on conditions.

Have a great one!

RE: 5 wood vs 4 Iron

A 5W is not a 4 iron replacement, unless you're replacing P7shovels. A 5W would replace the distance of a 3 iron, or 20° hybrid.
A 4 iron replacement would be a 7W/9W at around 23° or a similar lofted Hybrid.

RE: 5 wood vs 4 Iron

I absolutely love my 5 woodTS2. Seven iron my longest iron. I have a TSR1h 20* and GT3h 23* in my bag. The rest is a GT2D 10.75*, GT2F 14.25*, TSR1F 17*. At 79 this really works well for my game. The modern 4 iron in Titleist T series have lowest loft at 20* in the T350 and the highest in the T100 at 23*. The current T350 four iron is stronger than the earliest DCI 3 iron.

RE: 5 wood vs 4 Iron

5W & 7W all the way. Curious what the loft is for the DCI 3 iron versus the modern 4 irons.
