In the past I have played Cobra game improvement irons. When making the switch to Titleist, I did lots of research on how the 716's were Titleist's most forgiving irons yet.

RE: 716 AP1's

I actually also recently made the switch from Cobra Fly-Z irons to a new set of AP1's and have been very happy with the switch. I feel that the new AP1's are every bit as forgiving as my old Cobra's with a significantly higher and straighter ball flight.

RE: 716 AP1's

The 716 AP1 Irons are great clubs. I would encourage you to maybe try a few different shafts with a Certified Titleist Fitter

RE: 716 AP1's

I was recently fitted for new clubs and chose the AP1 716's. They are very forgiving, nice ball flight and trajectory. You will also gain confidence once you start hitting them. Give em a try and hit em straight!

RE: 716 AP1's

Hi Toby,

I am like you, a fairly high handicap at 15, but I used to struggle hitting behind the ball and consistency issues. For ME, I had to actively think of nothing else in my swing, but to get my weight to my leading foot. Once I did that, my strikes became a lot more crisp and divots came in front of the ball instead of behind. Not to mention I gained like a clubs distance in length. In any event, good luck in your practice. Oh yeah, Have Fun and swing easy.
The striking behind the ball sounds like a slight swing flaw that you may want to see a professional about, but there is always the option of practice, practice, practice and practice some more.

It is possible the Titleist clubs may be a different weight or maybe a different shaft from the cobras which may throw off your swing path or cause a slightly early release? I am no professional so my opinion is relatively simple.

The Titleist may be less forgiving than the cobras as it sounds like the cobras are an SGI type of club, which might be helping you cleanly sweep the ball?

Just a little response to your inquiries.

RE: 716 AP1's

I made the switch to Titleist AP1's a few years back. At the time I was a 15 hdcp I am now at a 10 and truly believe that a large reason for the improvement is the switch to the AP1's. Swinging my third set now 716's

RE: 716 AP1's

I would expect a pro that evaluated your irons would have made some suggestions to adjust your swing if consistently hitting fat shots. While I still hit some fat shots - at least I know why now. Any iron can only do so much for fat shots. You would still be past the bottom of the club arc. I moved from Cobra ZX to AP1 in 2012 and I didn't degrade, although lessons improved on my faults.

RE: 716 AP1's

The 716 AP1s are very forgiving, it launches the ball up high and provides maximum distance. I find it much easier to hit the AP1s as compared to the AP2s. Design wise, they both looks fantastic. I'd recommend getting fitted with a Pro and see which one 'feels' better to you. I tried both out, even though the AP2 was very tempting, I opted out for the AP1, and it has improved my game quite considerably! :)
