Currently in my bag I have a Driver, 3 wood, Hybrid 19*, 5 - AW (7 Clubs), Putter.

I currently have no wedges because I don't know if I should go for a 2 wedge setup with a 54,58 or 52,58. If I did this I would be able to carry a 4 iron

Re: 4 iron or 3rd Wedge?

My opinion FWIW is to have more options around the green. Some guys hit pitches and chips with only one club, Personally I

like the option to have the ability to use a club the way it was designed to be used and not manipulate to much at address.

Remember you scoring is really done from 150 or so and in. Good luck

Re: 4 iron or 3rd Wedge?

Hi David,

I recently pulled my 4 iron out and went to a 4 wedge set-up (48, 52, 56, and 60) along with 5 thru 9 irons. Additionally, I have 19 and 24 degree hybrids that I now use like a 4 iron so the adjustment was minimal. I found the flexibility in my short game far outweighs any loss of the 4 iron.

Hope that helps.....good luck.

Personally, I carry D, 3W, 5W, a hybrid 4i, 5i- AW, 56, 60.

If you go with the 3rd wedge (or 5th, depending on how you see it), you would need to choose the gapping between the clubs carefully. For example, the 714 AP2 PW = 46°, and the AW is 50°. In my opinion, the next most logical wedge would be a 54, followed by a 58... keeping a constant 4 degrees between wedges. You' will need to check what your existing PW and AW lofts are, and then choose wedges that have a logical increment.

Regards,

Wedges are considered your scoring irons for most people, if you have a great wedge game and truly need a third to match your distances and circumstances, go ahead and do that.

I personally love to hit my long irons and believe that if your long iron game is strong you can alternatively score just as well. It's all personal preference tailored to the courses you are going to play, frequency of situation in which you need each club.

Good luck!

Re: 4 iron or 3rd Wedge?

First of all there is no 'right' answer to this. It's a personal preference thing. I think the best approach would be to cover as many gaps as you can and space out your wedges appropriately.

What is the loft of your 5 iron? What is the loft of your AW?

Re: 4 iron or 3rd Wedge?

I asked myself the same question and tinkered around until I got what I feel is the right set up for me. I am 68 years old a play to a 9 handicap and all of my equipment is Titleist, Vokey, Scotty Cameron. I have a Driver, Fairway, 3 hybrids, 5-PW, 50* and 56* wedges. I used to carry 2 hybrids and a 60* but did not use the 60* enough to warrant the headaches it caused and have much more confidence with the 56*. I really like the Titleist hybrids and have more confidence with those than I do with a 2 iron or a 4 iron and the new 18* is a way long club. I think you just have to go to the range and hit a number of wedges and find out what works best for you. You might consider going with a 58* instead of carrying a 56 and 60. That still gives you a 6* gap in your wedges which a good goal. Good luck.

Re: 4 iron or 3rd Wedge?

I carry a 52,56, and a 60 with a 4 iron.
